What I don't get is why Shaw didn't immediately take back command. He's not that incapacitated. He's injured, on meds, but he seems to not be out of his mind. It makes little sense, outside of storyline dictates, that he was chilling in his quarters, while leaving his ship and crew in the hands of two "legends" he doesn't trust.

I'm going to re-watch, but I actually totally get this. IIRC, he even says Beverly is free with the meds. If you think your judgement is impaired, don't put yourself in certain situations. I work on Wall Street and I've almost made enormous errors when I was younger because I thought could handle the meds, I thought. (1- Broken leg, hydrocodone. 2- post surgery, pain killers.) Yeah, no.

Thank goodness for a "four eyes/two people" rule. So, now years later as a manager myself, personally, I can totally understand why he wouldn't take back command. It may not be OBVIOUS, but not being 100% can devastate judgement calls without you realizing it.

We all think forklifts when it says "Don't operate heavy machinery". :D

Great episode, acton packed and tense.

I think the standout scene for me was Liam Shaw’s monologue in Ten Forward and the way he hotwired the ship with his grease monkey from Chicago skills. PTSD and survivor’s guilt probably explain some of his psyche but I think he’s also just an ornery, moody, contrary sort of guy, all traits that make me really like him. I hope they don’t kill him off, but my guess is he will die a heroic death at some point so Seven can be the new captain.

I also wonder what’s going on with Vadic and the creepy alien boss and the knife. I didn’t recognize any of them. She apparently does want Jack for something but that isn’t clear either. My best guess is it will have something to do with a connection to the Great Link.

Yup. I liked Shaw from the start. I told everyone he was a good captain but all they worried about was he called 7 Hansen. Lol

Admiral Picard never did get to eat his meal...

"Admiral Picard? Sir? We were wondering...do you ever get asked how many lights do you see? Oh. former Admiral Satie--what a whackjob, huh? And, um, when you were in the Nexus, why didn't you simply go back a little further and prevent Dr Soran from even acquiring the trilithium in the first place?"

I still think the Solanae creatures are involved somehow.
They did send a probe from their subspace domain into our universe at the end of that episode.

And they would probably know how to attach a Changeling to a human after studying the E-D crew..

The only real nitpicks with this ep is the cursing. But everything else was absolute top notch. It was definitely the most TNG ep, not just because of Picard, Riker and Crusher but also the theme and premise of the ep was very TNG too. Just have the Ent-D trapped in the nebula and they work to escape and then see the birth of the aliens. It works. And it was great to see legacy TNG characters working together. I really appreciated the themes of family and how there is always hope if the crew work together and rely on each other. Very Trek. And the revelation that this dangerous nebula was actually an alien womb was very classic Trek to me. Trek always loved to give that different perspective and how the unknown can be dangerous but also beautiful.

All the characters had something meaningful to do. Shaw was used well as the "grease monkey". Seven was great. I especially liked her line about "She calls me Commander Seven, out of respect", telling Shaw that she prefers to be called Seven. We also saw Picard at his best. Taking control, being inspiring. I appreciated the flashbacks and Picard teaching good lessons to the cadets. Riker's speech to the crew was also well done.

We got backstory on Shaw. We also got some backstory on Picard and his friend Jack (Bev's ex). We had some great character moments with Riker and Picard when they apologize but also the scene with Riker trying to record a last message to Deanna. That scene at the end when Jack actually did try to reach out to Picard and he said his only family was Starfleet was heart breaking and powerful.

Overall, I am impressed. It was expertly directed by Frakes, great tension, great emotional reward, great character moments, classic trek, beautiful moment with the aliens. Also, I feel like there is a lot of detail and depth too. There is so much subtext with the characters. I feel like that there is great attention to detail as well.

One thing I don't understand ... is there more than one portal weapon? By the time it was used on the recruitment center, Vadic already had one on her ship. I'm not sure how much time had passed between stealing the weapon from Daystrom Institute and the incident on M'talas Prime, was there time to replicate it and send a copy to Vadic's ship? Or was it not the weapon itself that had been stolen, but rather the blueprints? In this case, everyone who had it could build their own portal weapon.

Yup. Pretty much the only thing I didn't like was the cursing. It's like they are only putting it on now because they can.

Incredible episode!!!

Was foolish to quickly read the comments on Jammer's Reviews…. Those guys apparently saw a Code Of Honor, Sub Rosa-level episode…………

Glad to see the episode get the deserved recognition here..!

I actually like that these characters are talking like adult characters and military veterans actually talk and have the conflict that real human beings and humanoids actually have. I pay my $9.95 a month for CBS All Access for a show that is refreshingly free of some of the censoring.

Yup. People swore 500 years ago. I’d be shocked if they stopped swearing 500 years from now. The usage here was perfectly acceptable and understandable. There has been some usage since Trek went streaming where it was a little forced. I would not say that about how Picard has done it.

Yeah, it's really fucking cool how they're using swearing in a non-obvious way, rather than obviously lampshading the fact.

Yes, I think there is more than one portal weapon. Remember that it was hinted that the attack on the recruitment center was just a small attack and that a bigger attack is coming. So my guess is that there is at least 3 separate portal weapons. 2 small ones (the one that took out the recruitment center and the one on the Shrike) and a bigger portal weapon that we will see later for the bigger attack that our heroes will have to stop.

It felt a bit of a stretch how pizza baking jolly Riker of Season 1 turned into family abandoning nihilist.

We don't really know what happened. Deanna seemed to hint she still wanted time apart at one point, like she was about to add a "however" after saying she was glad Will, Picard, Beverly and all were okay in the end.
