Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - The High Country by John Jackson Miller

Placing this also in the events thread, but STRANGE NEW WORLDS - THE HIGH COUNTRY is getting some big-release energy, and that includes a busy month of events coming up.

• The book release event is at the Barnes & Noble location in Madison, Wis. — the huge West Towne store, on Mineral Point Road. That's at 7 p.m. on Feb. 21. I'll be doing a talk and a signing.

• I'm at Great Lakes Comic-Con in Detroit, Feb. 24-25 — we'll have the book there.

• I'm at Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle, all four days, March 2-5. I have a table in the Authors Block; panels there, too.

• Later in March, I'm at Galaxy Con Richmond in Richmond, VA. That's March 24-26.

And... we're not done, probably not even with March. It'll be a busy time!

I live in the greater Seattle area and as much as I would like to go to the ECC and meet you and have a few of your books signed, multi-day tickets sold out months ago and same day tickets are hard to come by as well.

I’m sorry to hear that. The convention only started announcing literary guests in the past month (and I was just last week) so there’s probably no way to prepare for that. I was planning on going to Mission Seattle, but that obviously didn’t happen.

University Bookstore is handling two of my signings inside the convention, so I expect they will make any leftover stock I sign available at the store. (And just a general note for people who can’t attend an event: I’m still taking preorder reservations for the new book on my website. I also now have an eBay store page for the older books.)

One-week warning for the novel release, and I just added two more signing stops in March — House of Heroes Comics in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, on March 18 from 1-3 — and then I'll be at C2E2 March 31-April 2. We have something cool planned for that one which I hope to be able to announce later this week.

There are also a slew of podcasts about the novel — latest, from Traversing Stars, is here.

Yeah, someone always jumps the gun. The Enterprise War boxes had huge “Do Not Sell Before” stickers on them, but they haven’t done that in a while.

A quick reminder now that the time has arrived: I don’t read the official review threads (that’s your space, not mine), so any questions to me should go in this thread, safely spoiler-tagged. Thanks, and enjoy!

@JJMiller , I hope it's ok, since you don't read the review threads: I just want to thank you for 'Rogue Elements'. I was really disappointed how Rios was handled in Picard S2, given how much you did with him! The layered plot had so many nifty details I will certainly reread that book at some point. Thanks again; and mods, plz allow me to apologize for this post.

Heads up it’s now out In the wild. I got myself a copy at a Books A Million in Missouri

Our last remaining national bookseller chain suffered a "cybersecurity incident" on Tuesday, and their site has been offline since then. So at this point, I can't even see if any of the stores around me have it in stock or not. :(

A Mod should create a spoiler thread by Tuesday?

Just in case anyone isn't aware: anyone can set up a review thread, it doesn't specifically need to be a mod. Yes, I do set up some of them, but I did that long before I became a mod, too.

We only ask that there is a bit of standardization:
  • The title of the thread should be: <Abbreviation>: <Title> by <Author> Review Thread
  • The thread should be marked for spoilers
  • The poll should have these five options: Outstanding, Above Average, Average, Below Average and Poor. Please note these are case-sensitive.
  • Poll options should allow only a single choice, allow people to view results without voting, not display votes publicly, and no automatic closing of the poll.
That's it! So if a book is out, and there is no review thread yet, anyone can feel free to start one!

As for this one... I just finished watching the first episode of Picard season 3, so I'm going to go visit the Picard forum for a bit! :) But I will try to set up a review thread later tonight... assuming someone doesn't beat me to it in the meantime! :D

I greatly appreciate that. Thanks very much!

My wife does read the reviews, and she'll share if something needs a clarification on my part — I usually will then get to that over here in the general thread, because I assume others might have the same question.

(An example that's already come up on the new novel is that the change in how we refer to Una happened because she now has a surname, and house style for officers is to use the surname on second reference. Back during Enterprise War, we only had one name to work with. She's still called "Una" and "Number One" in many situations, of course, and she's called Una Chin-Riley enough times that there should be no mistake.)

Picked up a copy at a local B&N. Given that it's Lent, I probably won't be reading it until I'm on vacation, later this month, and well ahead of quota on the KJV.

I'm sure I asked this somewhere, but this doesn't have any first-season spoilers, does it? Because the DVD season set doesn't come out until three days after I leave on the aforementioned vacation.

Uh, kind of? It's set between episodes 7 and 8, and does spoil a reveal from episode 3. And, I suppose, episode 7 (I'm sure the events must have been mentioned, but I can't remember specifically when or how, just that any retrospective discussion would necessarily give away part of the story).

I'd wait until after you watch the first season. Part of the enjoyment of the book is how some of the members of the crew interact with each other. I think some of the lighter moments in the novel won't land right for you if you don't have a grasp of that. Some of the crew's motivations for their actions/comments will be more apparent as well.
