I think Shaw wants Seven as his first officer because he wants to prove that she shouldn't be in Star Fleet. He wants to give her the opportunity to fail and catch her in the act of being disobedient. That is why he is being so petty.
It's an easy way to prove someone's mettle and catch them doing wrong.

Re: language used, the only one that really stuck out and bothered me was Shaw referencing people “above their pay grades”. Unless I missed something I thought Starfleet a post-money organization. I assumed they were all volunteers and even if they weren’t, they would all be compensated the same. If it’s just an expression, seems like it would be a super dated one.
I'm just going to grab some popcorn and settle in to see the inevitable storm that follows this

Perhaps Captain Shaw sees a potentially superior StarFleet Officer in Seven and is simply harder on her than he would be on anyone else?
Especially since he wanted her as his Number One.

If Seven has not officially had her name changed from Hanson on her StarFleet record, then Shaw would have every right to call her by that name as her superior.
He may perhaps be reminding her that not everyone she encounters during her career to eventually commanding her own ship, will be polite or understanding of her past as a Borg.

He may also see Picard & Riker as potential hinderances to her growth as an Officer, especially since they helped her get into Star Fleet to being with.

My personal justification for the stupid pump-action phaser is that it was old and faulty. In my mind, normally you have to pump it once to activate it and that's all but because it no longer works properly Beverly has to prime it before every shot, and the power cell is almost completely run down. :bolian:
To add to this, Matalas on Twitter said (regarding the phaser held to Riker's neck) "...his own modded old school phaser. They’ve been on their own for a while so they rely on old tech."

As far as I'm concerned, that bolsters my excuse for the eccentricities of the funky rifle. :)

The problem comes when you use it in such a way that it will date itself very very quickly.
Exactly. They explicitly didn't have people say stuff like 'hey wassup maaan' in 90s Trek for that reason :D

Yeah but we don't live in the future, so the language needs to be understandable to modern audiences.
Sure, change everything else, future sets, future tech, future clothes, future society, future travel, but you gotta keep the language contemporary :p
And what is not understandable in previous Trek?

Thanks for sharing!
I have a hard time saving/copying any of the images. Instagram does not seem to support a Save As feature.
Instagram is just awful. I never understood why people seem to love it so much.

It's a TV show.
Everyone remember that in all your next discussions. We can close the board! :D

Nice post. Yeah I guess the people that watch TOS, TNG, DS9,VOY abd ENTcan't understand them because they were loaded with tech babble and no 21st century slang. Lol

I went to a job training seminar years ago and the only useful thing they did was get everyone there to start up new emails that actually had our given names, rather than jokes or pop culture refences.

One of the women had an email that indicated that she was a stripper who was very good at her job. I'm sad that I can't remember the actual email, because it was probably hilarious.

So when do we think Geordi is going to bring a dead Sydney to the bridge for Picard to see? You know, the old Engineer, the keen young family member, the little training cruise....
Actually I think they may skip that and we'll just see another Geordi roll under the blast door (which his daughter fails to emulate, and thus dies behind the door.) They may not do every TOS movie trope, if they replace it with a TNG trope.

I wonder when they're going to have Geordi next to the work course screaming they've got a coolant leak, he can't shut the warp core down, and the warp core ejection system isn't working; and he estimates 2 minutes to a warp core breach. ;)
