I think this really proves PRODIGY is written for both new fans and old ones because only the most die-hard Trekkies would get 90% of these jokes.

Interestingly, this seems to have a very similar idea to the original pitch for what became the Tribble episode of DS9. The original pitch was going to have the Sigma Iotians having become cosplaying 23rd Century Starfleet officers. This is much more interesting, I think, and a better use of it. I also like how the Enterprisians are not actually STUPID for doing what they've been doing. It's weird but their culture is sincere and probably much better off for it.

@Jag2112: Thanks! https://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/lcars/sc-PRO1-13.php is the image of Gwyn that I was thinking off - probably a rather inaccurate recollection of Gwyn leaving the Protostar on Tars Lamora, in order to negotiate with the Diviner. He focuses on the combadge, which he has very strong feelings about, but Gwyn's glare and clothing is not accurate.

In his mind at least, the destruction of Solum seems pretty literal, looks like a warzone in that image.

Indeed. It surprises me but more than that it makes it better for it. I've become less and less enthralled with self-referential shows that only I as a fan can appreciate. Prodigy has hit a chord that I like and feel I can share with friends and family without begging.

Canada doesn't get the Star Trek logo animation at the start of Prodigy. We did for SNW and LDS Season 3.

Also the upload this morning had the subtitles baked in, but they've fixed it.

The Kirk imitation got old Quick!
Sad to see Garovick not have a long Starfleet life.. Owell.
Honestly.. Stop with the call backs.. This is suppose to be an entry way for kids/ young adults to get in to Star Trek.. Having the show 50% memberrys kinda ruins it because they don't know what the hell is going on. Keep it to itself, introducing us to starfleet, having fun ...

Which this episode did fine. If they want to know more, they'll watch TOS.

Want them to do like what Tng did.. Rarely reference the past, and be it's own show not relying on what has come before, chart it's own path.
Way to much nostalgia. In all shows.

Looks more like something from Beyond rather that TOS.

The references don't matter. If Garrovick never existed in TOS and this episode was exactly the same, nothing would change. References are just introduced backstory for those new to it. No knowledge of TOS is required for this story to work.

I really enjoyed that one, so 10.

The Search for Chak is getting desperate for Janeway, so bad that she busted out her big-ass coffee cup. ;) Even the Diviner has made an appearance.

I loved that the shuttle that had been left on the planet was the good old Galileo. I also loved the reenactments of the different events that happened during TOS. The goofy voices to sound like Kirk and Sulu were perfect.

The 'new' Starfleet officers struggling to operate anything more advanced than the constitution class gave me a really goofy smile. As did Janeway changing the bridge to go retro! :D

What's happening to Murf? :o

Not really. It's introducing concepts to kids so that they can explore more of the franchise, i.e. going on the TNG bridge and things of that sort. Nothing is ruined, and it's doing quite well, if people are able to watch it and enjoy it as either uninitiated or fans.

Metamurfosis

So where was this planet supposed to be? If the OG Enterprise was able to visit it wouldn't that have to mean they're pretty close to Federation territory currently?

Probably the Beta quadrant, which TOS Enterprise went all over.

I wouldn’t worry too much about distances with the OG 1701, though. It visited both the galactic core and the galactic center like it was a Tuesday, and those are thousands of lightyears apart.

The transporter VFX swirls are also NuTrekian.

Prodigy does seem to draw some things from NuTrek (that still doesn't mean the Kelvin timeline is more advanced though because NuTrek based a LOT of its stuff from TOS - and I suspect same design approach could have happened in the Prime Timeline if the changes involved didn't change the people behind the designs in-universe - so its just possible those designs were shelved in the Prime Timeline and just taken out here in the 24th century for experimentation - plus there could have been other ships out there in the past 100 years in the prime timeline flying with more NuTrek inspired designs).

In the opening episode of second half of this season, when the kids were rescuing that whale, when the Protostar appeared above the whale and beamed it up, there was definite NuTrek 2009 movie style beat in the music (the first part of Season 1 also has this too).

The transporter effect is definitely more NuTrek style which is also based off of TOS... but its possible that SF was experimenting with different transporter harmonics here as brought back this visual effect.

Each class of ships might have its own different visual transporter system system it seems. Even the Dauntless has its own (but it seems more VOY style).

I wonder if this is intentional in-universe on behalf of SF... perhaps like experimenting with different transporter harmonics to see which works better over time?
Well, in this instance that could actually make sense... and it would also seem to follow the uniforms trend.
