Spoilers The new (massive spoiler) ship!

I also think they might have known at the time that the Galaxy-class Project was coming along and thought maybe that was a better way to honour the ship.

Agreed.

The Galaxy class could have already been on the books in 2344 when the Ent-C was destroyed. So, in addition to honoring the sacrifice of the C's crew (by retiring the name Enterprise for a suitable period of mourning), Starfleet could also have waited until the Galaxy was rolling off the production line. That would have been a worthy class to carry the name Enterprise.

That was the take of the TNG Tech Manual. But the thing is, there would be no reason why Starfleet couldn’t have commissioned another ship right away after 2344 to have the Enterprise name while the Galaxy class project was under way. That’s essentially what happened with the Enterprise-A and B. I think the original plan was to have the Ent-nil be decommissioned and the Ent-A would have been an Excelsior class for political reasons. But after the whale probe incident, Starfleet decided to allow Kirk to have an ‘interim’ Enterprise until the new one was constructed. So why not have the same thing between the C and the D?

Not a scale chart, I just wanted to compare the two designs. The actual model used in the show isn't out yet, won't be out until Season 3 releases, so all I've got right now is the current game model

Honestly, all this talk about fates of the Enterprises and why there wasn't an Enterprise for twenty years between the C and the D is just making me realize in retrospect, they probably should have just made the TNG Enterprise be the C. That way, you can have the B launched a year after TUC like it was, have it be in service for fifty years or whatever when it gets destroyed fighting Romulans at Narendra III, then Starfleet can go twenty years without a ship as it waits for the Galaxy class to enter production or mourns the loss of the B's crew or whatever, then in 2364 the new Galaxy class Enterprise C is launched and thus begins TNG. Or if TNG had to be about the Enterprise D, End of Discussion, then maybe they should have set the show a few decades later than the 2360s.

Another matter, given the Enterprise is always Starfleet's flagship, what was the flagship for the twenty years between the C and the D?

Thomas posted these on his twitter, the second one uses the new model and hull material:

Thanks for posting these. They only reinforce my opinion that the F looks too much like the E, unlike every other Enterprise which looks very different from its previous incarnation.

From a distance, the F looks like a cross between Voyager, the Enterprise-E, and Jumbo Shrimp.

Real Life reason why PIC's designs look only one step ahead of the TNG Movies: Except for Nemesis and "Calypso", everything was a prequel or reboot for two decades. It makes sense that Non-Prequel Trek would pick up where it left off. Creatively if not In-Universe.
