Spoilers She-Hulk: Attorney at Law discussion thread

Really didn't connect with this one, honestly. A little too glib and not serious for me. I think the fourth wall breaks was what really turned me off.

I like the character and the idea, but the talking to the camera and the on the nose preachiness is a bit much.

Making the points it was trying to make would work better in a "Show me, don't tell me" capacity.

I keep on thinking about Tormund Giantsbane reacting to the She Hulk.

People have different opinions about whether the shows are good, but for me Infinity War/Endgame was a major peak for the franchise, and while phase 4 hasn't been completely consistent, Wandavision and Loki were excellent, Spiderman: No Way Home was really good and they've set up exciting stories down the road. So, a few of the shows are throwing all the new characters against the wall to see what sticks, and that's okay, because phase 4 is basically a soft reboot for the franchise.

I just KNEW that She Hulk controlling her powers faster than Bruce Banner would evoke all that old "Every competent female character is a Mary Sue" sentiment. Yeah, they're a bit on the nose with that stuff, but you're thinly veiling your true feelings there a bit.

Starting slightly off topic regarding the overall MCU, I do think that (for me) it's been somewhat tougher to get into post Endgame material simply because Endgame felt like the end of an 11 year plot arc/journey. Both the gap due to the pandemic and the idea that we are going deeper into the rabbit hole (with plots including the multiverse and magical after death experiences) has made it somewhat more challenging to get into the MCU as a whole. That said, I still watch the material if somewhat more causally and still enjoy a fair amount of what is currently being produced.

Which brings me back on topic to She-hulk. If I had to rate out of 10, I'd give it about an 8. It wasn't perfect, but it was funny and the hour went by pretty quickly.

The good: For an origin story, the episode had a solid humor mixed with some more serious moments. There wasn't any major action, but the story stood up on its own and I honestly didn't feel like any action was needed. It introduced the main character well and I am looking forward to discovering more about her.

The weak: The only (admittedly nit-picky) element that pulled me from the moment was how She-Hulk got her powers. The manner in which Banner's blood managed to get into his cousin's bloodstream and instantly infect her felt a bit contrived.

The non-issue: The CG. I've heard a number of complaints about the CG and I really didn't have any issue with it either way. If you are looking for it, I guess it's kinda-sorta noticeable at times, but it was pretty decent for a TV show. For some of the closeups, it felt as if they just did a black wig, green makeup, and a low camera pointed upward Lou Ferrigno style (I know this wasn't actually the case).

As to the first point, the episode was 38 minutes long, including motion picture length end credits, so I should hope that the hour went by fast.

As the second point, we've already seen how fast Banner's blood will infect a person. We see it in the origin of the Abomination and we saw it effecting Samuel Sterns' cranium pretty much immediately with contact. And, yes, these are also very conveniently placed drops of blood.

I really hope the MCU picks up Sterns plot line at some point.

It was a solid, fun episode. Never really laughed out loud at any time, but the person I watched it with shared a lot of big grins with me at several times during the episode.

I suppose the 'anti-woke police' will be all over this, and there were a few moments where a comment or two about our trash society could have been handled a bit more subtle maybe. But honestly, that's all. Tatiana was killing it, as was Mark. And their Banter together could not have been any better. They have a great chemistry together, so I do hope we get to see Professor Hulk (Smart Hulk sounds stupid) again before the end.

Some interesting set ups for following episodes. I'll definitely tune in for the episode two. I still need to finish Ms Marvel, which didn't really captivate me. But this has drawn me in.

As for the quality of the MCU in the last 3 or so years.....
I will agree that I feel that it's been dropping. Some movies and shows have felt rushed, and even though there's a lot of talk about setting up the Multiverse, it feels like they aren't sure where that's going yet. Phase 1 was great but they focused a lot on the characters and single stories while already knowing what the first Avengers would be like. Now the focus feels more on 'we want to go somewhere but not sure where yet, and let's drop in as many cameos and easter eggs while we're at it' while forgetting that the actual show/movie should have a story to tell and characters to work with. Even though I felt Thor Love And Thunder wasn't nearly as good as Ragnarok, atleast it did that. Single story, focus on characters, no set-up for more. I liked that.

Oh, and as for who commented that the MCU movies are great because of good box office..... Transformer movies killed it at the BO too. I refuse to call any of the sequels good. Hell, even the first one was only awesome because of awesome SFX and nostalgia. And the Bumblebee movie was good. The rest, trash. That earned a lot of money.
So no, high box office does not equal good movie.

My wife and I watched this over dinner this evening. Our kids are on summer holidays and it is beautiful weather--or maybe they're just not interested in this one--but they weren't jumping all up and down to see it. The two of us watched some Marvel together without the kids--something we haven't done since Guardians of the Galaxy V.1. It was a lot of fun and we really enjoyed it.

I am betting the lines were intentionally put there directly to show the anti-woke people that the MCU couldn't give a f**k about what they think--but something did surprise me. When Jen said that, as a woman, she is scared and angry all the time my wife stopped the show and told me that is so true. Men have no idea what a woman has to go through and it makes her angry that it never gets discussed enough. We've been married twenty years and she has never said that to me. That line hit home for her, and I'm sure it did for a lot of women watching the show.

Or, Marvel does get the distribution rights to solo Hulk movies back from Universal in 2023...

I've been wondering for awhile now if She-Hulk is meant to circumvent that rights requirement. If the series is popular enough, maybe a Hulk movie that technically gives Maslany top billing over Ruffalo would get us our Hulk movie.

idk, that sounds like they do, no?

I’ve had to learn to control my anger and emotions when expressing myself because I alienate people if I don’t and was kind of thinking that’s not just a thing women deal with. When she mentioned the risk of violence with that though I realized that is something I haven’t had to deal with and hadn’t really connected before.

I do not see that going over well. Fans have wanted to see a true solo Hulk sequel and if your idea ever becomes reality, to those Hulk fans, it would come off as the Hulk once again punted to guest-star role, rather than lead.

Speaking as someone who grew up on the Bixby series, who loved The Incredible Hulk and thought it was one of the best superhero films for a long time, was super bummed out Norton left role, was completely won over by Ruffalo, and has loved his multi-film arc over the decade plus, I would be fine with that result if it meant a Hulk-centric film. So what if he shares the spotlight with his awesome cousin?
