I finally watched an episode of "Strange New Worlds". All I can say is . . . eh. It's not bad, but it's not earth shattering. I don't see what all of the fuss is about. But this episode was sufficiently scary. However . . . Pike is just as boring as he was in "Discovery".

I've said throughout that Strange New Worlds is "not great, not bad, the show Discovery always should have been". But it is the most unambiguously classic Star Trek-y series of the current era, and for people otherwise struggling to warm to the current era SNW represents quite the proverbial oasis in the desert.

I quite like Pike so far, but I am really not enjoying Ethan Peck's take on Spock at all. Still, everyone else is quite engaging.

As for the guy playing Sam Kirk . . . bit of a ham.

Wait until you see William Shatner... ;)

NO. No, no, no. I love Season One of "Discovery". I am so grateful that it was something completely new and nothing like "Strange New World", which is basically a return to the traditional style of Trek (BORING). Mind you, I don't like Seasons Three and Four of "DIS", but Season One remains close to my heart.

I don't like the current state of the Star Trek franchise right now. And one of my biggest beefs is this penchant for psychoanalysis that seems to be overused in all of the shows . . . to the point that these moments seemed in danger of getting in the way of the narratives.

First episode I really didn’t like. Didn’t care for the Aliens rip or the Gorn as Xenomorphs.

The Gorn are a race on Trek that I find uninteresting. For some reason lizard aliens never work for me. Nor do I think there was much to work with to begin with.

That and the use of a unenjoyable film franchise makes this episode a one and done for me.

The Gorn may well be my least favorite thing this whole season.

In the earlier episode, when it was more just descriptions, I could squint hard to make things fit. Seeing it in action? It screams alternate universe/reboot kind of thinking on the part of the creative staff.

Season one of Discovery was unlikeable people on an ugly ship doing unpleasant things and being obnoxious about it. It has virtually nothing to recommend it.

while season four was unlikeable people on a ugly ship doing absolutely nothing of relevance and being absolutely extremely nice about it. :guffaw:

Completely understandable, depending on Jack’s age. If “Arena” were produced today, it would be universally regarded as a piece of shit. It was ahead of its time, but behind ours.
I first watched it in 1967. We knew it was a guy in a hokey rubber lizard suit back then, too. And that Kirk could have easily escaped at a leisurely stroll.

And we didn’t care. Unconvincing special effects on TV were no more of a problem than unconvincing special effects on stage. It was a limitation of the medium that we accepted. The idea that TV shows are supposed to have realistic-looking CGI effects didn’t exist in 1967.

The Gorn design from 1967 seems to be good enough that the DSC prop masters built a skeleton replicating the shape and build of that costume, right down to the skull with the slits under the eye sockets. For a laughable rubber suit nobody today would take seriously the production team in 2017 sure liked it.

The "we" I was referring to was myself and my family. And yes, we thought it was hilarious. As a product of the time, I don't need reminding or educating about the state of that era's visual effects and costuming. Also, I never mentioned any expectations of CGI effects from a era when the pocket calculator was a modern marvel.

In the future, don't presume to speak for me and don't try to put words in my mouth.

That was a fun little Easter egg. God forgive me, I laughed when I saw it.

When you see a stage play, do you complain that the alien is obviously a human actor in a rubber suit? Or that the “blood” is just a red cloth the actor is holding? That’s just how these things have to be done on stage. And in 1967 it was how they had to be done on TV.
