I don't understand the hate Disco gets / still gets.

I couldn't stand Jolene Blalock at first and didn't like her Season 1 and 2 makeup so I contributed to the atmosphere even though I was a cheerleader of the series as a whole. A lot of us made those threads awkward and unpleasant back in the day, myself included.

Sounds exactly what was happening at st.com at the time. Haters *"Bashers" and "Gushers" going at it.

Oh, but they had trolling spammers the site was pretty much incapable of stopping.

ETA correct word used to describe the haters *

And my problem with this stance is that somebody speaking about diversity and representation is dismissed out of hand as a bigot and a racist when nothing could be further from the truth. Also the same is said whenever somebody asks "what about the white man?". Again, not true. It's the calling attention to the diversity and representation that is the bigotry. After all, Sulu and Uhura were in TOS and their race was not even made an issue of. THAT is the way to handle diversity and representation. When you call attention to it, what you're really saying is that the white man is no longer welcome, so bigotry.

And DISCOVERY bent over backwards to go out of it's way to fall all over itself on this subject to the point that there are no straight white men in the show. Sure, we have Staments, but he's gay, and therefore a representation, so he doesn't count.

I'm going to say this the most polite way I can - that is complete, and utter, bullshit and that same sort of shit spouted by people with either underlying, or overt, racist/bigoted views.

And fuck me, don't even get started on your final paragraph - how small can you be that positive representation of previously marginalised groups makes you think that way?

You obviously weren’t around for Voyager and Enterprise. Those shows took a pounding, criticism of Discovery is pretty tame in comparison.

Won’t someone please think of the poor, underrepresented white straight male!!!

Jesus Christ, give me a break.

Maude Flanders is back and even she thinks the children can handle this...

The not liking the show thing I'm okay with -- believe it or not -- it's the reasons why in a lot ot cases that I'm not okay with.

If someone doesn't like the idea of DSC promoting diversity and representation, then my problem with them has nothing to do with Star Trek and has everything to do with their sociopolitical views. I make no apologies for saying that as far as I'm concerned there is no "middle ground" when it comes to diversity and representation, I won't cave in or back down on those issues under any circumstances. Wherever that leads, it leads, and so be it. Not just here, but anywhere.

I had a run-in with someone on Facebook, and I didn't find their view of DSC to be repugnant. What I found repugnant was their view on representation and calling it an "agenda". I told them exactly what I thought of them once they showed their true colors. Because they'd been hiding them for some time. Which made me even more disappointed.

Here's a thing to consider: how do they think they'd react to alien life when they can't even react well to other people from this planet who aren't like them? The message of Star Trek is lost on them and they don't even know it.
Since this seems to be directed at my post I will mention once again that my issue is not with calling out bigots and those who complain about "wokeness" or diversity. I myself call out and criticize those posters and types of posts all the time and it is imperative to show that the board membership as a whole is opposed to such bigotry. I spent a good portion of my post differentiating between genuine "haters" as in people legitimately full of hate and bile, or those just here to troll, and the generic form that gets labelled haters just for not liking or being critical of the show. And as much as people like to say it's not true, the latter do get labeled that quite frequently.

Speaking of the genuine "hater" variety...

Warning for trolling. Comments to PM. Go sell white fragility someplace else.

ETA: I know this is only going to reinforce your worldview about being automatically labeled a bigot just for saying loads of bigoted things (imagine that), but if the shoe fits...

Aaaaand, that's all folks. I think we're done here.

Whether people want to admit it or not, the hate towards DISCO is greater than any other Trek series - including Picard and SNW, which both play just as fast and loose with canon.
Since you never came back to clarify your post in response to mine, I will just add that the idea that Disco has received an unprecedented level of opprobrium over-and-above all other newly introduced Trek series is dubious at best.

TNG generated a ton of hate mail and irate fanzine articles at first from people who thought it was shitting on the legacy of TOS. The only limiting factor was the lack of commonplace internet usage and no social media at the time (giving virtually everyone a means to express themselves loudly), which started to influence the nature of fan complaints during the late-TNG/DS9. and especially VOY-era.

By the time ENT rolled around the internet was in full swing and cries of "Akiraprise", "catsuits", "Gene's Vision", "canon violation" "not my / not real Star Trek" and the like were endless.

The dawn of YouTube / comment sections, social media, review bombing and being able to monetize real or faux hatred of a series, film, or franchise made things really take off and affected the Kelvinverse films and the streaming shows immensely, but while the way the criticism is made and the ease with which hostile people are given a greater voice has changed, it's not at all unprecedented or unique to this show or franchise for a new show/film to get ripped to shreds and then gain a greater following or appreciation as time goes on or as new shows/films arrive to get torn a new one in their place.
