In-universe this is just how things look in 2259. But never forget that in-universe James Bond was Roger Moore in 1985 to defeat Max Zorin, Pierce Brosnan in 1986 to sneak into the Soviet Union with Alec Trevelyan and then he was Timothy Dalton in 1987 for the General Pushkin assassination plot. All three played the exact same man, they just looked different depending on the mission and the year.

So by acknowledging that there is a difference in look to the same person at different points in time and mission then we could imagine a side story of Daniel Craig's James Bond in 1985 defeating Max Zorin and when discussing the mission we would need to say in Daniel Craig's mission he did this which might have been different than how Roger Moore did it to defeat Max Zorin. Same James Bond but we still say which actor to have a point of reference to discuss...

There are James Bond fans who definitely prefer the idea of Max Zorin squaring off against Dalton's 007.

I remember having concerns after the SNW pilot (based upon my own fears as a disabled man) that Batel abandons Pike when he ends up melty because she didn't want to deal with her lover becoming disabled. I guess those fears have been assuaged somewhat by her being the one to arrest Una. Even though she was ordered to, it has to damage her relationship with Pike. That forming rift between them probably results in the dissolution of their relationship before Pike melts.

The guy who plays Homelander in the Boys should have been Kirk. He plays a hero in that and so he would be perfect.

1) Homelander is no Hero, but I’m gonna assume that was sarcasm on your part.

2) Isn’t the guy who voices Bomiler on Lower Decks from that series?

What do you mean? I've seen the movies. Homelander is the biggest hero after Soldier Boy.
Karl Urban is in it as well.

This Pikeverse Kirk does not have his TOS entourage with him. Any Captain is potentially maimed useless without the right crew and ship to command and support him. Kirk could have ended up commanding the Grissom eventually.

Heh. If Kirk had commanded Grissom, Kruge would have gone down early and the Genesis planet would have been a success. I'm. Just. Sayin'! ;)

That's how TOS played out his Academy career. First the Republic as an Ensign and trainee, then a pre-graduation promotion to Lieutenant a'la Saavik in TWOK and teaching a class where he met Gary Mitchell and finally graduation and serving his first deep space assignment under Captain Garrovick on the Farragut.

Not a pre-graduation promotion to lieutenant. Everything points to Command School being a graduate course that commissioned lieutenants who opt for that path return to the academy to take. It factors in nicely with Kirk being an academy instructor as a lieutenant- a collateral duty he was picked for as an up-and-comer while attending the command course and reprogramming the Kobayashi Maru scenario in his spare time. In fact, it may have been his instructor's credentials that gave him the access to do that in the first place.

Noticed it on the first watch, but was so alarmed over Una being arrested that it took the second watch for it to hit between the eyes:

In the very last scene of the season, Anson Mount breaks the 4th wall. Why?

Also: did anyone else feel totally compelled to go back and watch TOS Balance of Terror right after viewing this?

Good catch, I didn't notice that. And I'd been watching reaction videos right before it so I'd already got my memory refreshed on Balance of Terror before watching.

a TOS reboot

Sssshhh: don't give them bad ideas.

As I’ve said before, I see Pike’s fate as inevitable, but I don’t necessarily think he will have to stay as a disabled person on Talos IV forever. He might be restored.

There was an issue of the second volume of the DC comics series in which movie era Spock (between 5 and 6) gets permission to go to Talos to tell Pike that recent medical breakthroughs may be able to help him recover (though they apparently did nothing for the poor chair-bound patients in Lower Decks...). Pike elects to stay with Vina on Talos.

Just finished it!

It might be just me, but these last two eps don't feel as smoothly put together as the rest of the season. There are great moments but the whole suffers from some awkward placements.

One example is the Romulan commanders farewell. It comes naturally at the end of BoT but it feels like forced fanservice when given to Pike. Hemner's farewell to Spock felt similarly forced.

Not sure if I buy our new Kirk, but give him time with the role and I could probably come around. I also wish we had more of a lead up to Una's incarceration- it came almost out of nowhere since it was last mentioned in the first half of the season and never implied again. As it came here it felt sudden.

That all said, it was a joy to see BoT recreated so well. And Matthew MacFadzean absolutely nailed it as the romulan commander- best Mark Leonard followup I've seen. The Farragut was also a great design and I appreciated the Kelvin hat tip. Even though I'm irked that the rank badge was too low down the shoulder of future Pikes uniform, the Monster Maroon was otherwise delightfully accurate.

I'd say give SNW a bit of time to rest and recover then have at it again with the next season. Just felt between these last two eps SNW was starting to buckle.

A few observations and disagreements here:

1. I feel like a lot of die-hard Trekkies prefer to argue to their last breathe, about Kirk not being a rules breaking rebel but as was brought up in “The Drumhead”, PICARD is a Rules Breaking Rebel as being an effective captain on the frontier means that these things happen. He agonizes over breaking the rules and isn’t the Pine Kirk (who was a delinquent set straight by Pike) but he’s still someone who develops a “maverick” reputation. If nothing else, Kirk’s brother probably knows his brother cheated and “hates to lose.” Indeed, my irritation with this bit is it acts like PIKE isn’t the guy who breaks the rules flagrantly like we saw in “First Contact.”

2. I feel like going over Ortegas as the Stiles stand-in overlooks any interesting possibilities for her own character. Basically, the idea that in seven years, Ortegas loses her affectionate friendly cheerful optimism and snark to become someone colder as well as meaner. She saw Starfleet lock away Una for at least seven years, after all, and that has got to embitter a person. Also, unlike Stiles, she basically keeps her attitude in check and everything she says about “they started it” is 100% correct.

3. I’m surprised there’s not more commentary on how the fact that Pike’s attempts to find peace, understanding, and kindness are the absolute wrong moves. The typical Trekkian solution utterly fails in every way possible and violence really is the best solution.

4. The monks were clear that Pike’s fate was sealed if he accepted the time crystal. I wonder if this means that the crystals actually make a Stephen King-sort of effect that no matter how you try to change time or the past, it will always be worse so there’s really a malevolent Devil-like force at play here.

5. A reminder that “Errand of Mercy” wholesale made up the idea that captains can marry people. This is something I always found amusing as it apparently resulted in a lot of people believing they could and it becoming a minor tradition.

6. That hug actually makes me ship Laan and Pike.

7. I also was annoyed Spock didn’t mention he knew Kirk. It’s one thing that he didn’t date Uhura but would have been nice if they established, “Yeah, I knew him from my days as a TA at Starfleet Academy. We had an altercation over one of my tests.”

They should take Pike to a magic cloud for repair.

:)

It's not like they're super serious: they seem to be more friends with benefits. Pike slept with another woman between episodes 1 and 10 after all.
