Spoilers Star Trek: Picard General Discussion Thread

I'm still a bit mystified regarding Seasons 2/3 of Picard, insofar as Matalas seems like he was hired as showrunner for Season 2, abandoned it entirely to Akiva Goldsman, and then was given free reign to do whatever the hell he wanted with Season 3.

Seems like before season 2 aired Matalas was hyping the hell out of it, then as soon as some of the negative reviews started coming in, he basically backpedaled and said the whole season was Goldsman's. Given Akiva's been working on both this and SNW simultaneously, I'm left wondering how he had the time.

At the end of the day did season 2 even have a showrunner in the traditional sense?

I'd suggest listening to his Inglorious Treksperts interview and read between the lines. Matalas was pulled off MacGyver during it's fourth season, where he worked with fellow Picard season 2 writers Travis Fickett and Cindy Appel to co-showrun the second season. COVID restrictions and production delays then heavily altered the course of the second season. Matalas came up with the time travel broad outline, and Akiva Goldsman added the childhood trauma elements etc. But there are elements from Matalas in even the later part of the season, from casting Jay Karnes to the 12 Monkeys and MacGyver Easter eggs. For example, Spearhead Opporations was a mercenary group in MacGyver that a new main character owned. And that itself is a callback to 12 Monkeys Project Spearhead, which was a military group trying to develop a vaccine against a super deadly mutating virus.

I think, based on things both Terry Matlas and Akiva Goldsman have said, Matlas was hired to be co-showrunner with Goldman during S2 and then solo showrunner for S3. This was likely due the fact that Seasons 2&3 were going to be filmed back to back so this allowed writing of the two seasons 2 overlap. It's clear that while Matlas had input into S2 he was very much focused on S3 almost from the word go. In his Inglorious Treksperts interview, he had extensive talks and negocations with the TNG cast back in 2020 which is when S2 was just being written.

Didn't think about this until now, but Worf will be the first character to ever be a main character in three Star Trek series. Seven would be the second if she gets a spin-off.

Moral of the Story: be a Bad-Ass!
They'll all be listed as regular, right?

Brent was listed as such even though he was only in 5 episodes for S2. (We know Marina was only there for 2 out of 6 months) not all 7 TNG regulars I don't think will be in all 10 episodes.

Robert Meyer Burnett, who has despised this show (to put it mildly), has read all of the season three scripts and says it will be the best season of Star Trek television in decades
While I think RMB is kind of a nut (I know that's politically correct, but if the word fits...) but Terry Matalas liked and commented on his comments basically confirming that RMB has indeed seen the scripts
OOF that does not bode well... also the optics of showing RMB ''privileged info'' when he's ''courting'' fandom menace shitheads is pretty bad

I wouldn't read too much into Marina only being there for 2 months (she said in the same interview that the TNG cast are in the show "a lot"). Terry Matalas basically said in the podcast on Inglorious Trek that there was some scheduling issues to arrange with Marina because she lives in the UK. It's very likely that the just shot Marina's scenes when she was available. The vast majority of the season was already written when it went into production. It's like in Season 2 all the Stargazer scenes were filmed last despite appearing in episode 1.

plus
John de Lancie
let slip they may have shot stuff intended for Season 3 while working on season 2 (which makes sense if you're *there* and you don't have to come back if not needed)

Santiago Cabreara will be appearing this weekend at Londons comic con. He posted a video on his twitter page saying he looks forward to meeting Picard fans at the convention.

RMB did a mini-podcast and stated there was pressure for change regarding Picard from high up people not from CBS or Paramount, after they were especially unhappy with season 2. Maybe Amazon, who are likely footing a high portion of the production budget? If so, that could indicate a pivot could take place within Lower Decks as well.

Maybe the leaker was with Amazon?
 that shit sounds familiar...

it's the same type of bs that midnight edge was peddling about disco so maybe you should stop listening to that kind of stuff

My guess is we're going to a teaser trailer, but not a full 2:00+ min one yet. Also perhaps the release date. Interesting that only Patrick Stewart and Gates McFadden are the only cast on the Picard panel. I guess this means Beverly Crusher does play a big role in this season.

Update: Terry Matalas has all but confirmed on Twitter that we're going to get a trailer.

I think the main focus in terms of trailers and such though will likely be Lower Decks, and probably a short teaser trailer for S2 of SNW.

BTW does anyone know if there is going to be another big Star Trek Day thing this year like they've done the last two years. I'm just wondering because I can't see them bringing back the TNG cast for S3 and not trying to do a big panel with the as many of the cast as possible.
