Well, it wasn't "one" episode we're talking about it's two. And not just any two episodes, but the only appearance of Pike (in TOS) and the first appearance of Kirk. Her absence in "Doomsday" isn't really relevant here because she had appearances both before and after. If one thing is clear it that Uhura has a heck of a work ethic. She shows up for work a week after having her memory wiped clean.
Look, I'm not even saying that I believe she had to have started under Kirk, merely that those who do say so have more than adequate justification for doing so and should not be dismissed as using "headcanon". (Not sure if that was you who did that, but somebody did upthread.)
So we have 7 years between SNW and TOS - as she is a cadet, maybe she is on something approaching a "year in industry" like you'd do at university. So she is one of the top performing students in her year, gets the Ent posting for the year/2 years in the real world, and then is posted elsewhere for a few years after graduating before getting the transfer to the Ent around WNMHGB which would ties it all up?
I do stand by there being no specific dialogue or anything else that states she had to start under Kirk but this would cover both sides of the equation.
Oh please, I've had the queer community in my life for decades, so I do appreciate your victories, but this one just didn't register with me. I probably wasn't paying attention which is why the detail slipped by me but it wouldn't have changed my opinion of their performance. You're seeing it with a different pair of eyes and I am, so you feel differently. That's fair.
Get the chip off your shoulder, not every CIS gender person is dismissive or hostile. I have great admiration for the non-straight community and am happy for the representation they're finally getting. I did theater for years and you can't do NY theater without large LGBT involvement. Sweetest, funniest and toughest people I've ever met.
And they all gave better performances than what I saw in the last half of this episode
I think the "chip" that you speak of is a more than fair reaction to the comments of a few on here the last few days and their disgusting attitudes towards LGBT people
