Man, this makes me wonder how much Garak would be hated if Berman, Behr, Moore and Piller had possessed the guts to make him openly gay or bi.
They are not being handled like any other character, they are being included just because of what they are. Not because the story demanded it, not because they are good actors ... they were brought in just to make a statement, at least in Discovery.
In the new SNW episode however, the actor/actress delivered a good performance ... only the pronoun thing took me somewhat out of the story.

I call anyone of any status "them" if I can't remember their name. At the end of the day I'll call them what they want to be called and if I can't remember their name they're getting the "them" treatment and some pointing for identification.

I didn't even notice until someone pointed it out after, It didn't stand out at all, It wasn't even important to the story. Unlike Adira where it was a plot point.
