The whole point is whether seeing someone "like yourself" even matters to any particular individual.
Not everyone takes it for granted. I don't think you can even understand what it's like to not have it. It's like explaining what being wet feels like to a fish. But when you haven't had it, it's wonderful because you see some part of yourself reflected in something you love.

Sybok's followers took over the Enterprise-A with just one shuttlecraft and a handful of handmade projectile weapons. Not everyone on the ship could have been brainwashed by Sybok's telepathic talents given how much time he spends on the bridge or with Kirk, Spock and McCoy. Security on a Federation starship is a pretty flimsy concept and if ships named Enterprise can fall to a small band of disgruntled rebels then there's not much hope for the rest of Starfleet's vessels.
Sigh. I know there's a consistency there. But I hate it every time I see it. Just rubs me the wrong way!

Loved it!

The actor who played Captain Angel is Jerrie for Big Sky!!! I love her. I was so bummed to see her turn evil. Very TOS.

She also reminded me of Ardra in way.

Damn this show is doing almost everything right so far…

PS: Sybok???? :lol::lol::lol:

That’s awesome. Great potential there to explain Spock’s reactions in ST:V

They mention "The Tropic of Cancer" and I think of that Seinfeld episode.

That was the first Seinfeld episode I ever saw. Incidentally, the actor who played Lt. Bookman in that episode, Philip Baker Hall, passed away earlier this week. By an odd coincidence, I happened to have been watching him in the movie Magnolia right before I heard that news.

Sybok: Let me feel your pain Stonn!!! (grabs him in a forcible mindmeld)

Stonn: Get away from me you criminal!

T'Pring: Stonn, are you all right?

Stonn: I'm fine. This V'tosh ka'tur did no harm, but I need a few moments to recover (leaves)

T'Pring: Illogical criminal scum!

Sybok: Not at all. I felt Stonn's pain. He wants you, but is broken you are engaged to my half-brother.

T'Pring: I never thought I had a chance with Stonn!

Sybok: You thought wrong.

So, Spock didn’t tell Kirk or Bones about Sybok but he told Chapel because he felt guilty about kissing her? He also didn’t tell Kirk or Bones that Sarek was his father but it was common knowledge when Pike was in command. Some funky little retconning here.

and that dude was Stonn?

I dunno, putting such a focus on Spock and T’Pring thru the whole season seems like a weird thread to pull from TOS considering it won’t be resolved “in-universe” for another 6-7 years.

as for the rest of the episode, it was pretty great. Everything with Pike was gold from the mutiny to the pirate voice. Sure the Enterprise was taken a bit too easily but..eh.

7/10 for me. Better than last week for sure. But still not topping the Gorn episode.

Enterprise Bingo Kirk era: Place bets on when Clueless Captain Kirk finds out that Ambassador Sarek is Spock's father.

Aye, matey!

I always thought it was kind of silly for the guards to stand with their back to the doorways they are guarding. They should station themselves across the corridor (or in this case, over by the engineering station) FACING the door, so they can't be decaffeinated with Kirk-fu judo chops the moment the doors swish open. But what do I know- I never graduated from Starfleet Academy.

It seems Pike has a much different relationship with Spock than Kirk. While Kirk being his friend and eventually his best friend comes along, Spock clearly plays things close to the vest, possibly due to his experiences with Pike.

Listen, did this episode have a few plot holes? Yes it did.

Do I forgive it because Captain Angel was a seriously sexy bad guy? Yes I do.

Do I forgive it because the kiss between Spock and Chapel was romantic and hot with a dash of angst? Yes I do.

Do I also forgive it because Jess Bush's and Ethan Peck's performances in that final scene are beautiful and heartbreaking? Yes I do.

And was my jaw on the floor over them bringing back Sybok for the first time since 1989? Yes. Yes it was.

My favorite episode so far.

Pike is probably up there with Kirk and Bones given Spock immediately torpedoes his career and possibly friendship to save him.
