    We don't need Trek either.

One could call different "theaters" (odd name) separate wars

Yes we do. WW III didn't happen in the 1990s. It's silly.

And extra-terrestrial intelligences haven't made their presence known - or had it discovered by us by our own devices - either. If they do, they won't match against Star Trek's established histories for any of them. Including whatever stars their homeworlds orbit.

Alternative history, all the way from the start of intelligent life off-Earth to now, and into their version of the future. I'm okay with this.

Why is it silly? Star Trek is an alternate history, it's not our world.

All fiction is "alternate history." Trek is no more or less so than Blue Bloods.

All the fussing about timelines is an example of fannish obsessive excess. Not one in every five thousand viewers sits down to watch an episode of Trek with any awareness or interest in the "alternate history" premise.

"Theatres" is a perfect name. War has always been mankind's favourite spectator sport.

Uh,.. isn't that what this forum is for? :D

I'm not too wild about the change. Especially since Pike puts the Eugenics War and WW3 in line with a "Second Civil War" in the US that would need to start in a few years. I hope that's not gonna happen, and I also hope that by the 2050s all of us and Star Trek are still around and there hasn't been an atomic war. Would the show then have to come up with yet another explanation?

Better to accept that the whole of Star Trek takes place in an alternate timeline that branched off from ours somewhere between the 1960s and 1990s.

What "almost everything" ? One quick line from Space Seed and Chekov saying 20th century in WoK? An easter egg background prop in a Voyager time travel story? I'm not one who discards canon lightly, but, seriously.

Why do we need to keep it?

    Blame the Temporal Cold War.

Phlox also said the augments were the product of 20th Century Genetics in ENT Season 4.

None of them directly contradicted Spock until now.

Interesting, during DS9 they didn't want to give a specific date for the Wars for basically the same reason the current writers/creators don't.

I just accept that the Eugenics War and WWIII were shoved to the 21st Century because it just didn't make sense that we would have the technology to successfully genetically engineer humans and build a sleeper ship and send Khan into deep space.

Yep. And now they've gone out of their way to contradict him, and to say publicly that they're doing it deliberately to fix a problem.
