We in the audience know what happens to Pike after that accident.

Pike doesn't yet know it.

And none of us know what - if anything - happened by Pike's efforts, Vina's, the Talosians' or anyone else's, or any combination of the abovenamed - past the end of "The Menagerie".

How did the universal translator instantly translate the language of the Shepperds when they had never spoken before?1?!

That's one of the things you just have to go with in Star Trek...almost every time they meet a new species..from TOS, to TNG, and especially VOY far off in the delta quadrant, the crew and the aliens can understand each other. At least they mentioned the UT this time.

Also, the effectiveness of the UT depends on commonalities with known languages.
The shepherds are using something known in terms of syntax and structure.

Great episode - I gave it a 9. If the show keeps this up, this will quickly become a top 3 Star Trek show for me.

I know. But I would not be a real Trek fan if I did not ask questions about how tech works. ;)

Sometimes you find the Golden Wonka Ticket and win a chance to get some sense knocked into you. Kiley 279 just happened to be that world.

No one found a ticket.

It was all a fix.

Out of the millions of Wonker Bars that they were selling globally and daily, Slugworth/Wilkinson was there within seconds of each one of those children "finding" their tickets, to whisper poison into their ears.

Those 5 kids were pre-selected and each trap on the tour was microtargetted to derail each child in succession until they all had the opportunity to leave with nothing or leave with a never ending gobstopper, except Augustus Gloop who was sent to the fudgeroom without acquiring his gobstopper.

Augustus got a raw deal.

Sad.

The Shepherd sounded a lot like James Cromwell at times.

My highest compliments to the costume design team. The alien attire looked alien. I marvel at its shape and textures. It's just not something you can pull off a rack.

I must say I also love the new interior design of the Enterprise. It is remarkably spacious; the generosity of volume really is critical for a long deep space assignment where cabin fever could quickly develop. I hope the lower decks crew enjoy real living quarters and not bunks in a corridor!

Someone remembered Uhura's high mathematical aptitude! Wonderful! We know she will fill in as navigator when necessary.

This show does have a refreshed trek-across-the-stars vibe which, like many of you, I am enjoying immensely.

Slugworth was the Q of that movie.

I'm glad they found a natural and perfectly organic way to fit Uhura's singing into the plot that wasn't hamfisted or corny or both. There are good ways to use her vocal talents(this episode, "Charlie X(TOS)") and bad ones(Star Trek V).
