Chapel Character Teaser

I'll go with the original audio from the scene itself (The line / word in question occurs around the 2-minute mark):

To me he definitely says "Klingon-ee"/"Klingoni", not "Klingonese". :)
Interesting catch.

Gerrold's final shooting script, reproduced in the book The Trouble with Tribbles (1973), page 209, has it "Klingonese."

However, I acknowledge that in that clip it sounds as you say.

I have no explanation.

Paging @alchemist. They might know what's going on here.

I dunno, I really give Majel Barret credit for "What Little Girls are made of" where she is indignant but keeping her dignity.
That part was written differently, IMO. The part was more of a guest-star role than a reoccurring character. IIRC, it wasn't originally Chapel, but was rewritten to make it her.

“Just a nurse” really undervalues what nurses do, and the skills it takes to be one.

Hell, they make fun of that attitude in MEET THE PARENTS.

The only thing that supports the idea she couldn't natively speak Klingon, was the ridiculous and honestly stupid scene in Star Trek the Undiscovered Country (and played entirely for laughs), where they were all using printed books on the Klingon language to respond to a Klingon hail because "the universal translator would be recognized..." - which are two stupid premises in themselves, given how many times we saw everyone speaking perfect and flawless English back and forth during a view screen communication in either the show itself or the films.

I always wanted them to do like a two line fix, "I speak 12 dialects of Klingon. This is the 13th."

I would have been happy with them feeding the real-time transmissions of the Klingon Base into their computer and have the appropriate response quickly appear (phonetically) so Uhura could just read it from said screen. They have a Main Computer with all the data of the Federation...what (and where the hell did they come from) are PRINTED HARD-BOUND PAPER TEXTBOOKS doing there??!!

I mean, that still makes it like Uhura's job could be done by....a computer.

Listen. Here's what I want to talk about:

That lingering eye contact between Chapel and Spock as she's turning away from him. :adore:

I might start shipping Spock/Chapel for the first time. ;)

will repost

Oh, the joy and wonders of shipping. it can be very toxic, i say this as a person who was anti reylo (rey/kylo) from star wars and I loathe how JJ Abrams thought it was a good idea to make it cannon, when it made no sense. he was evil.

So shipping wars can very toxic but also good if it is well written and worth it in explaining why you ship a couple.

However I doubt any ship in SNW will go well and get a loyal fandom based on past writing of Nu TV trek Although Tyler and Michael form Discovery seem to have a fan base and no one cares of her and Book, but who watches discovery minus hard core star trek fans.

For SNW, I think the ship can go many ways but that will depend more on chemistry, I did not like most of the mini trailers for the characters because I felt Spock was shoehorned in with all the characters, especially the girls. Be that as it may, it opens the doors for shipping possibilities for ships.

spock/chapel
Anyone can start shipping spock/chapel based on their interaction, from the trailer she is the one that heavily flirts with him the most. Although I hated the slap. if Spock had been the one to slap her, it will be since as abuse. this is not how to write strong women to me.

Spock/Laan
Anyone can start shipping Spock/Laan since he has done a mind meld with her or does one with her, not to mention the Khan connection.

Spock/Uhura
Anyone can also start shipping Spock/Uhura because based on the final scene from the Uhura's trailer. Uhura also does stair at him, more than she should , I think people will ship or try to force this ship the most, because they already have quite a fan base because of the Kelvin Films. I saw an interview on Collider where they were asking Ethan Peck, what was it like meeting Uhura for the first time and Peck answer was pretty grey.

Spock/Tpring
Then yes, I am also going to mention Spock/Tpring. I dont care that we already know how it ends based on Amok time from TOS but this is a possible ship too and Tpring seems to like Spock here.

So it will all depend on the chemistry and dynamics, However if I am going to guess the one ship they will build up to, My money is on Spock/Uhura, because not only is it Alex Kurtzman the same person behind star trek 2009 , the writers have also said they wanted to explore a relationship that they felt could have happen but never did in TOS and that was one of the reasons Kurtzman gave when he wrote star trek 2009, the trek timline that made Spock.Uhura canon.

Be that as it may, I think he could also have been referring to Chapel, but TOS portrays both women differently with Spock, Chapel was portrayed as a woman with love lorn crush, While Uhura was portrayed more as a women who may have liked him, flirts once in a while that he had no issue with, but unlike Chapel it is not a love lorn crush , However in fairness to Uhura, she was a black woman and her stories line were limited. I will always say this about Uhura, no chance a woman that fine would not have had one of the big 3 (Kirk, Spock,Mccoy) not like her. this never happens on TV shows with sexy girls, however racism in the 60s was still a big deal. So we may never known how things would have gone....until now?????

So I guess the ship wars would have been fun to look forwards too but I don't have too much faith in any of the writers, I am not going in thinking I will get harry potter kind of shipping wars, meaning I am not going in looking for good writing. But it will be nice to sit through it.

Who? New Star Trek fans for whom Star Trek Discovery was there first introduction to Star Trek.

You know much like the first season of Star Trek the Next Generation actually drew new fans to the Star Trek franchise in 1987; which was started by the original Star Trek in 1966.

My first question would be, since she IS a linguistics expert ...
"Why hasn't Uhura already read those apparently available books and have them pretty much memorized?"

I understand that the writer's were going for a bit of a joke with it, but it really is a stretch to believe.

Memory wipe. It's a bitch.

Shipping is probably one of the oddest fan responses to a product. I never understood the big deal.
