Chapel Character Teaser

Perhaps I misunderstood what shipping meant in this series of posts. Mulder/Scully was the quintessential ship—at least to me–and my fascination with that developing relationship kept me tuned into the The X-Files long after I lost interest in the conspiracies, black oil, and bees.

So, when you wrote “Shipping is probably one of the oddest fan responses to a product. I never understood the big deal,” I thought of those two and I responded with a teasing reference to McCoy’s speech to the seemingly heartless Spock—a character who proved how deeply emotional he truly was after McCoy left the room. (“Requiem for Methuselah”)

Shipping makes sense to me as a fan and my engagement with a product is tied directly to my investment in relationships that grow among the characters; the plots and even the stories are of secondary concern to me.

 

Ah, I didn't recognize the quote.

Shipping is one of those things that decreases my interest in a product. So, the appeal is less for me than getting to know the characters on an individual basis.

Relationships in fiction are a strange thing. I get the idea but it rarely comes across as genuine in many shows. Films do a little bit better but that might be long form storytelling preference for me.

 

It's Mulder and Scully from the X-Files. Many Fans of that show wanted them to be a couple.

No I follow that. It was the quote after the fact that led to me raising my Vulcan eybrow.

More to the point, shipping is something that perhaps intellectually I can almost get the appeal of, like in real life people of going "wouldn't be such a cute couple?" which is about the extent of my investment in to fictional characters romantic lives.

Probably not since these current writers hate all old Trek, as we all know.

 

Except TOS never stated that, as we've established. It's what fans seem to have commonly assumed. Arguably it's suggested by what actually is stated in "... Little Girls...," but that means also arguably not.

 

So in your estimation TrekBBS is for Porn. (Starship Porn)

 

Chapel is delightful in SNW.

Who cares?

 

Yeah, how dare they give characters realistically complex personal histories! The nerve of the people running this show, really.

 

I doubt Gene Rodenberry would have been thrilled.

Kurtzman does not seem to learn, if you want to go this route, create new characters.

 

If we take "what Roddenberry approved of" as our baseline standard for what qualifies as Star Trek, we'd have to vanish a big chunk of the franchise.

 

Gene was a misogynist who hated TWOK. How much stock I put in his opinion is usually confined to the writers bible.

He also said someday someone new will take on Star Trek and bring their own attitude and beliefs to it and he welcomed it.
