Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - The High Country by John Jackson Miller

In 2019, I told the story of where Captain Pike’s Enterprise was during the Klingon War. Time to get back in the saddle. My new novel, STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS - THE HIGH COUNTRY debuts in hardcover November 8 from Gallery Books!

It was an honor to write the first novel under the #StrangeNewWorlds banner — and plenty of fun! Catch the TV series starring featuring Anson Mount, Rebecca A. Romijn, Ethan Peck, and many more on May 5 — and get ready for a rip-roaring yarn when THE HIGH COUNTRY debuts!

Edit: And we have a cover!

How far into season 1 does this take place?

I'm looking forward to reading this book by John Jackson Miller. I like the coverart.

To one question, I cannot reveal when it takes place.

As TrekBBS readers may have noticed, the title of this book and some early data was accidentally inserted in some catalog or site LOOOOONG before it was supposed to appear: I would like to thank the manager of the site that first broke the news for agreeing to my request to take it down until we actually confirmed the title, date, and details. I’d always rather do a reveal with accurate information at an event or some other forum if possible. (We came THAT close to having the cover ready, too, this time!)

Interesting that they're going hardcover with this. I wonder if every SNW novel will start as a hardcover, just like the PIC ones?

Can someone refresh my memory as to why this is a hardcover and not trade paperback?
A reason hasn't been given. Is there a problem with it being hardcover? Does it bother you that the Picard novels are all hardcover? If the higher price of hardcovers bothers you, you could always wait for the trade paperback reprint.

I won’t deny that authors are far more likely to be interested in writing hardcovers than trade paperbacks, just as we’re more likely to be interested in writing trade paperbacks than mass-market paperbacks. Beyond the prestige and just general coolness of superior packaging, it also gives books a longer sales lifespan — they get multiple debuts and thus multiple chances to sell, which is helpful to any project. Booksellers definitely see a hardcover/softcover dynamic as a sign of a strong franchise.

If the question is why the hardcovers and softcovers aren’t released simultaneously, that just generally isn’t done in publishing. The hardcovers need to complete their cycle. Even when new-release movies are available for streaming, they tend to start with the premium version.

I will say that for both my Trek hardcovers, I’ve crafted stories that are a third longer than my usual novels, which improves the value proposition. I understand the books do cost more, and work extra hard to provide an experience that’s worthy of the format.
