In my review, I split it up and it really only needed four episodes to tell this story.

Discovery in particular isn't good with the season long arcs too. I'm hoping they do more 3 parters next season rather that one big arc. And let's get them back to exploring rather than one big emergency that takes the entire season.

Also: Book dies, then returns and both scenes have emotional impact and rewards. If you're going to kill off an important character and then bring him back about five or ten minutes later this is the way to do it. TROS tried that with Chewbacca and utterly botched what could have been an emotionally-gripping moment and release of emotions when it was revealed he was still alive.
I'm glad he didn't die but if that had been his swan song I would have been satisfied. He was arguably the best character in the entire season that wasn't Saru.

That's my sense as well. This season could've been the end. Because it's not, it'll probably end next season. To be honest, I'm fine with that. I have enjoyed Discovery overall. It's a good series. Not great but good. Although it's really wound down in season 3 and 4. They never seem to have enough content to fill out the seasons. Time to put the resources into a new series.
I think the scenes with Tilly and Vance really cement the idea that Tilly will be in an academy series. And there is presumably the S31 series in the pipeline.
If DSC does end at the conclusion of Season 5 at least it's been getting steadily stronger over the years. It has the potential to end on a note so high it earns its place of honor in the pantheon of small-screen Trek. But they need to keep doing the things they did correctly this year.

I hope it ends on a high note. But it has not been rising in quality over the past two seasons. YMMV of course. But it started out stronger and then declined starting in season 3. They seem to be running out of ideas to fill the seasons. A change is needed.

Smaller cast, yes! I like them but so many are just filler.

Shorter season, given the writing shortcomings, yes.
I don't necessarily need more Vance, but I do like his character.
I will say that DSC is the one Trek series that has shown it needs to tighten up its season-long story arcs and if we can keep the season to 10 episodes that will be a big help in keeping the story pace going and excitement in the audience. If you're going to play a long game then the fewer filler episodes that don't really pay off the better.

By invading another species domain. Gross. That needs to be resolved before I treat Stamets as anything beyond mad scientist.
There’s also the obvious comparison here to Ender’s Game. Basically the same misunderstanding of a species with a single consciousness encountering a species of individuals. Only with a kindler gentler human race.
That aspect of it felt a bit unnecessary. Like a hat on a hat, they didn’t need to be basically a less racist Great Link to get the point across.

The main storyline only needed 6. Then maybe 4 worldbuilding stand-alones.

Perhaps. There is certainly research done regarding aquatic and avian life, so I would recommend looking at it. And we know the network is inhabited by sapient beings. So, yeah, it's a huge problem that needs to be resolved.
Now that's how you bring back Tilly and make it count.
Book NEVER died. He was transported off the ship (in time) but the transporter beam was redirected and held by the 10C who later re materialized him.
I know that. But it looked like he did.
I think he maybe meant it in terms of story delivery, not actual events.
