this episode reminded me of SG-1's Torment of Tantalus where SG-1 gates to a planet where they find this device where five races uses basic elements to communicate and exchange information. To Quote Dr. Jackson: How do you ensure universal communication? You reduce the method of communication to the most basic elements common to everyone and everything that exists in the universe.

This episode reminded me a little of Arrival, kind of the process of communication. I thought the communication aspect of this episode was really well done and it had a sense of wonder that I haven't seen from Discovery in a while. I'm hesitant to say that the wait to get to the 10-C was worth it though, as I feel like this would have been a great episode last week and then we can spend a few episodes with the 10-C, almost maybe a little Devil in the Dark ending to end the season.

As for the rest of the episode, it was kind of bland, and I think Tarka has worn out his welcome. For once, it would have been nice to see the "villain" stand down and allow the process to play out, but of course we have the narrow-mindedness cliche to bring us the "Action" finale and it's one of those roll-eyes moments for me. I also thought Saru and Burnham yelling at each other was cringeworthy.

I don't know what to give this episode. I promised myself that I wouldn't give episodes higher than a 5 the longer we wait to see the 10-C. Now that we have (And the look of them was actually really nice, reminded me a little of Spectre of the Gun), I would have given that plotline an 8. Unfortunately the rest of the episode brings it down some, but I've been hard on Discovery the last few weeks (And thanks to Paramount Plus, Discovery was up first or else I would have seen Picard first), I'm feeling slightly generous. I'm giving this one a 7, hoping that the finale comes to an ending that maybe gives us a little Devil in the Dark feel rather than gunfights and ship fights.

Another talky talk, feely feel episode...

It's very Discovery. I gave this one a 7. But my interest hasn't picked up.

‪‪I enjoyed this one a lot.

A lot about this episode reminded me of Contact, and as @tomalak301 mentioned, Arrival, in ways ‪‪I appreciated.

I’m continuing to enjoy Saru and T’Rina’s relationship, our getting to know/spending more time with Dr. Hirai’s character, and most of all, Jett Reno continues to demonstrate that she is both totally awesome, and always right.

Good shout, I thought the same!

Same here, but they took it to the next level: Molecules :D
There's also some Close Encounters mixed in with those light patterns - should've gone da-da-di-da-dum... :D

It was much better until the obligatory disco moment: Here is our way to reach them! We only have to step into this thing and.... but we're gonna go away first, and then scream a little. Priorities!

Actually this didn't bother me as they were playing a waiting game at the time. Needing for the device they will take with them to be ready. Legitimate pauses are the perfect place for this sort of thing.

It's Picard walking the ship in Best of Both Worlds and talking to Guinan. Its when they do it when there isn't a period where they are waiting, that it annoys the crap out of me.

For me the communication aspect was great in this episode, one of Trek finest. I could have completely lived without any of the subplot of the threat of Book and Tarka.

This is an especially strong example of why it's so weird we don't get a trailer for the next episode until a few days into the week this year. "NEXT WEEK ON THE SEASON FINALE OF DISCOVERY" would have been a very hype-inducing thing to see written on the screen in bold gold letters after the final scene.

If there was a way to delete the Booker/Tarka storyline, this arc could be one of my favourite Star Trek stories - even if it's just a take on Arrival.

I get the mad scientist thing, but the fact that everyone else just goes along with him when he's so obviously on the wrong side just makes it so frustrating to watch.
