Didn't that area use to be the Astrometric Lab on the Original?
I seem to remember there being a telescope of some sort on the blueprints.

Though, I might be thinking of the area behind the bridge, been so long since I've seen them.

Has anyone figured out what the little tower behind the bridge is for? I've seen discussion in the TOS forum that it's supposed to be the turbolift tube but is not in the correct position, or the bridge itself is at that angle (real hot take there).

I hope it also has a large window.

 

Well in some ship schematics have it a holding area if there's more than one turbolift at the bridge, some schematics have the bridge at an angle.

In SNW the bridge interior is not at an angle and the turbulent is not directly behind the bridge, I think it was the ship designers and set designers not having communication.

 

The thought of the bridge at an angle is very unsettling.

I don’t believe it will be as long 2-3 years. Their last appearance in Disco, S02E14 Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2, took place in 2258, and as you said, it looks like SNW S01 will be 2259.

 

I don't know. If they are relics, then maintenance would be an issue. Throughout TOS and Discovery they are always doing manual replacements of tech (no beaming in replacements or anything). Now imagine doing that with older (but still very complex) systems and doing it a couple hundred feet in the air with heavy winds and snow.

Yeah, it could be just a personal choice - for example I like the look of wind turbines because right now they say "the future" to me, which might be why the graphics guys inserted them in the first place - I'm just saying it seems like the most problematic renewable power source to choose.

Yeah, it's a good point that they could have mitigating tech for those problems, but doesn't this whole setup argue against them implementing older tech to "get away from things". "We'll use old wind turbine tech, but also add some antibird and antinoise tech, and we'll have to either service them ourselves or contract with some outside group to come in periodically and service them." ? I think I would rather install a ground source heat pump (or a micro fusion reactor ).

Edited to add: I rewatched the trailer and I realized there is a whole field of wind turbines there and they are all very large. No way is this an installation for a single cabin or even a whole compound - this is a likely a utility-scale installation. Which makes much of the previous speculation moot. But now I really have to wonder about the local municipality or the broader power grid if they are installing wind power here instead of making use of other options.

 

On a large scale, sure.

 

The anti bird shielding and repellant use a lot of power.....

But seriously, this is a visual element and its there (I would assume) to showcase the use of renewable energy in the future. On a purely visual level how do you show renewable energy that is easily recognizable to today's viewing public? That's solar panels or wind farms. Certainly in a winter environment with fallen snow, solar panels aren't really going to work visually.

And that's probably all the reason its is there.

 

It's odd, but typical, that they use the TNG transporter sound XD

That is the only way the bridge design can be reconciled with the exterior design of the ship.

 

It's not the only way. Other schematics have the bridge oriented correctly, with the turbolift tube wrapping around the back of the bridge.

 

I messed around with some 3D models and as far as I can tell the best way to get the TOS bridge to fit neatly inside the bridge dome, turbolift and all, is just to scale the ship up to be roughly the length of the Disco Enterprise. This has the side effect of making the height of the two-deck tall saucer rim to be double the height of Voyager's one-deck saucer rim, which is a lot more suitable for fitting rec decks inside.

 

Even Doug Drexler did that with his TOS Enterprise cutaway, which was partially used in Enterprise Season 4.
