Well...I just watched it...

Did they really decide that El-Aurians can age at will to fit in? Is that going to ruin the chances of Guinan showing up on Discovery? Geez...Excelsior class starships are still in service? I noticed that Laris pretty much resembled the woman who played Picard's mother in that flashback...intentional?

And didn't Janeway say LA sunk under the sea?

JANEWAY: Have you ever been to southern California, Chakotay?
CHAKOTAY: No.
JANEWAY: After the Hermosa quake in 2047 this entire region sank under two hundred metres of water. It became one of the world's largest coral reefs, home to thousands of different marine species.
(A punk couple walk past.)
CHAKOTAY: Some interesting species in this century.

An Earth Quake half way through WWIII?

That's just insane?

Oh.

Did someone see Superman one too many times and nuke the fault line?

Arizona Bay.

Who wants to take bets Seven beamed those boarders out on wide beam? She really needs to tone it down.
Na space those stinking welwalas
Guinan's weak El-Aurian aging line to explain her appearance. I wouldn't have even mentioned it
If she hadn't mentioned it I wouldn't have even noticed. Guinan was always 90% hat and dress so I wasn't really paying attention to her age.
The new pew pew hand phasers suck
They look way too much like TNG Romulan phasers.
"We won't go back! You don't know what it's like in our universe
I love that scene so much. Would love if we got an episode on that ship.
I noticed that Laris pretty much resembled the woman who played Picard's mother in that flashback..
Thought the same

Riker said he had a fleet of the most advanced ships in starfleet when he bared down on those Romulans last season... Are they all scrapped, or refitted now? So quickly, because there's a new Apex?
Those ships were on the outskirts of federation space, this fleet was assembled in 5 minutes in the dio system.
When exactly?
less than a bar, actually, more or less when raffi leaves for the excelsior. Which was a curious point to put it in, actually!

I've read that from multiple sources now but where do people see that registry?
we see a ncc-2000 display when Picard, raffi and elnor talk, however we also see a display with Picard’s old Stargazer, so I assumed it was a set of museum displays or whatever. The biggest evidence is that a true excelsior-looking ship shows up with the fleet and is heavily featured on the front line.

The officer giving out the ship assignments at the Academy is a science division admiral. Have we ever seen an admiral wearing science colours before?

no, but commodore oh wore yellow.

So, Deltans who haven't taken an oath of celibacy...hit on "sexually immature" species on bars?

To be fair, having Q in the story ASKS for the stakes to be as high as possible. I mean they can't have "a slight diplomatic impasse on planet whatever" when an omnipotent being is running around. There has to be something drastic.

Like Robin Hood?

Soji and Jurati costly Wonder Woman Woman 1984? Standing on bug shoulder pads.

Huh?

  • Hey, absolutely no one obey the captain's order to stop firing.

Yeah, that was annoying.

I mean if it’s that or his mother, I’d much rather have Crusher. Having it be his mother would just be too cliche, especially since that's what they did for Disco S2

It would also require quite the explanation: Where No One Has Gone Before made it pretty clear that she lived into old age.

Well, I don't comment on here often, but that's the best episode of Star Trek i've seen since the 1990's.

I wasn't keen on season 1 of Picard overall, and discovery is missing something, it's average at best. That Episode of Picard that i've just watched just absolutely smashed it, the bar is now set high, really high.

That was pretty epic!

Not a fan of Lower Decks or Prodigy?

I hate how the Federation (& especially 7o9) are hyper aggressive and shoot first.

If it were any one but the Borg, I'd agree.

One other thing I forgot to mention before, it was nice to see different classes in the fleet, after we got a single class fleet in last season's finale.

So this is New LA?

Yeah, this episode wasn't for me.

It felt like this first episode was just set-up for what the show is going to be in the future outside of the last 15 minutes. We got every character apart from one now pushed back into Starfleet off-screen, something which was a very big element in the first season so just adds to this episode existing to reverse decisions from the first at the expense of dramatic potential.

And then there is the Lower Decks-styled 'lets fit a reference into every scene', has every current season of an ongoing Trek show now referenced the Kobayashi Maru? I don't remember a specific reference in Lower Decks S2 but that seems like the one where I'd be extremely safe to just assume it happened. Let stories stand on their own without constant references to what came before, I imagine the rest of the season won't be this bad with references but there is the potential with the alt timeline stuff.

Is that Guinan's entire appearance in this season? Every trailer and promo shot of her is in that one scene so I'd guess so, feels weird that there was a focus on Ten Forward in the marketing just for it to be that. I'm okay with that though.

Once the episode actually started I found it enjoyable enough, not very substancial and after my outlook at the end of every Picard S1 was "not much happened here but I'm sure it'll pick up soon" was proved wrong week in and out I'm just going to lower my expectations to the floor here. Completely disagree with the argument that this kind of pacing is okay but it's a streaming service product and we live in a binge culture. It's being released weekly, format it like a weekly shows with substantial episodes which stand on their own. It doesn't need to have completely standalone episodes with a monster of the week, just pacing that works in an individual episode and doesn't need to be binged as part of a "10-episode long form movie" to work.

Visually stunning though, crisp colours and competent camera placement followed up by what continues to be some of the best CGI on the small screen.

I would like to sign up for your news letter. Maybe this is all part of the Academy show they seem to be prepping? Stealing a little bit of Discovery's thunder with the academy storyline? Captain Rios!
Well I'm not saying it's going to be a USS Stargazer show or anything. However if you look at the first two seasons of Discovery, non-Discovery sets were pretty basic compared to some other shows like the Expanse, likely to save money (the Expanse was also extremely expensive, which is what's gotten it canceled twice). The only sets that were elaborate were Discovery (which was redressed into the bridges of a few ships), the Klingon Bridge, and the Section-31 ship. Even the corridors of the Discoprise were just redecorated Discovery corridors. In Seasons 3 and 4, they added their virtual stage (like the Mandalorian pioneered) to generally great effect for the show, but sets have generally been pretty simple including it. We see a room with a pillar or a table most often. Cheap for production.

But then we get this lavish new set and conference room and corridor? For just a few episodes of Picard since we're now headed to an alternate universe than back to 2024? Yeah not a chance. They may redress into another early 25th century ship, but they're going to use this again and again to get their money's worth.

The other *potential* alternative, and this might be nearly as good, is they did what they should have done from the start and constructed a "miscellaneous bridge" that can be the bridge of any starship, of any race with a redress. The TMP Enterprise bridge famously served this role during the TNG-Voyager era, where it was redressed into dozens of different ship bridges. Of course, having that was because TNG benefited enormously from having many sets and props ready to go from the cancellation of Phase 2 and the production of the TOS movies. Discovery / Picard had none of that, and I do think visually suffered for it (Riker on the Discovery bridge in Season 1 was just a eye sore).

So we'll see. I think though now that we're in 5 full years of production of Streaming Trek, the warehouse of sets and props (both physical and digital) for CBS to use is starting to build up again, like it did during the TNG era.

Top notch premiere. Although I do hope they don’t go over the top with the action to make up for the…slowness of S1.

Loved seeing young Q become old Q. And the Guinan scene was fantastic.

my money is still on Jurati being the new-Queen.

love Rios with the cigar on the bridge. But everything still seems so dark.

8/10.
I was concerned the Guinan scene was going to be terrible because I hadn't seen Whoopie Goldberg act in many many years and frankly, some actors and public figures just go weird after 20 years of time passing and personality / physical changes and not doing a particular role. But that's not what happened. It was mostly Guinan all over again (though the new bit about El Aurian aging is smart and fascinating and I want to hear more), and a reminder that Whoopie Goldberg is an Academy Award winning actress who has done dozens of productions, many of them acclaimed and not just the long time View host.
