Early Promotional Uniforms

Spock's collar was higher in WNMHGB also. I believe it was fastened with snaps and not zippers, so that it would be easier to put on and take off without having problems with his makeup.

I keep trying to come up with a backstory for the three flashlight scene ;)

"Captain, are you quite sure this is what it means to light the darkest hour?"

"Shut up, Spock."

They were shining them at Gul Madred's grandfather but Sulu and/or Scotty was just out of shot.

So what would be the obvious interpretation of lighted hand held objects in a space opera science fiction setting? Ray guns perhaps?

These flashlights were configured to emit the frequency of light that best reveals stealthy, nearly invisible alien predators.

I've wondered about Spock's taller collar in Corbomite for years. I have two hypotheses:
1) They wanted to make him look more alien;
2) Nimoy had a long neck, and covering more of it with the collar reduced the amount of "copper" makeup they needed to use.

My understanding is that the higher collar was so his makeup wouldn't smudge the tunic collar.

Of course, neither of these account for why they didn't keep the design after Corbomite.

I guess they came up with another workaround for the makeup. Although they did return to giving Spock a higher collar than the rest of the crew in ST:TMP.

My field experience is very limited. I'm mostly just a space cadet. But I picture this trio with flashlights casing through a derelict ship or abandoned station like Regula One. It's pretty intense.
Have you thought of using Laser Pointers, if somebody is literally bending light, a person who is off angle should see the Laser curve / bend, and you know somebody is hiding in that area.

Given the intensity of Laser Pointers, there's no way they can hide the deflection of Lasers from off-axis viewing given the nature that Laser Light interacts with the various particles in the air and lets you see the laser line travel while you're "Off-Axis".

You can already see Kirk and McCoy's tunics shrinking in this early episode, in the sleeve length:

Still, I would see a moment like that as a kid, and it looked so cool. Seeing a landing partly outdoors made me want to go out and play Star Trek.

This could go on and on. "Miri" has so many artfully composed shots.

I love that landing party establishing shot, and I had the same sort of feelings about going outside and being on a landing party, even if it drives me crazy to this day that Rand didn't have a tricorder. P.S., look at the shape Shatner was in, even with the tight fit.

Its interesting that Rand is in pants. I wonder when they made the decision to go short skirts.
Grace persuaded Majel to help her lobby for the mini skirts so they were able to show off their legs as a sign of women's emancipation. Ironically, they are now viewed as sexist through a modern prism but they went to good way to making Trek so iconic. My regret is that their introduction went hand in hand with increased sexism in the storytelling following the pilots.

Not to mention that grace has different hair. I guess the basket weave wig was t completed by then

I know Grace was wearing Sally Kellerman's pants. She went off and complained to Theiss after the shoot and they came up with the mini dress version together.

I've wondered about Spock's taller collar in Corbomite for years.

In "Where No Man...", it has Velcro on both sides so that it could be split and flopped down, away from the thick greasepaint, between scenes. The later TOS uniforms had black collars. I have also heard that Nimoy often requested a higher neck on costumes. Some of the "Corbomite" collars seem to be added extras.

Similarly, he has an extra, high, dark collar in "The Motion Picture", both to create an alien look and to keep the makeup off the rim of the light grey uniform's neckline.

Ah, I see this has been covered.

I've seen a photo of Spock sitting at the helm (after Mitchell has been zapped) with the collar slip and flopped down the way you describe. Perhaps made between takes?

I've always wondered what the provenance was for the uniforms worn for all those promo photos done before the series launched, but before they refined the uniforms (and hairstyles) for regular production.

You have the velour and color of the main series uniforms (except for Rand not being in red yet...and there may not have been a red at that point). You also have the simple gold rank stripes from the second pilot and the insignia from that, as well. Also, the collars are like a black version of the second pilot, lacking the shaping of the original series uniform. And, of course, Rand is wearing pants still!

Is there any particular knowledge we have about when/how these sets of photos were done? Why the hybrid uniforms? Basically, any information would be fascinating to me:)
Can someone repost these images, getting "URL signature expired"
