Spoilers Star Trek: Prodigy General Discussion Thread

Murf is too gelatinous to be Drella (the Drella are primarily energy beings).

It isn’t really established they’re energy beings, just that, in reference to a hypothetical similar creature, “To meet with specified requirements, entity would exist without form in conventional sense. Most probable mass of energy of highly cohesive electromagnetic field.”

‪‪It implies that the Drella “would exist without form in conventional sense,” and though Murf doesn’t appear to be a mass of energy, he does have an unconventional form. Perhaps he’s a mass of energy in a gelatinous shell?

I’m not totally convinced that Murf is a Drella, but ‪‪I still think it’s the best contender so far.

"A giant black hole of nothingness in space," which the 1701 encountered as the dark area surrounding and protecting the giant space amoeba in "The Immunity Syndrome." In "Where Silence Has Lease(TNG)" the 1701-D encounters a black hole of nothingness in space very, very similar in appearance to the one from TOS and yet Data says no Federation records exist of a similar phenomenon.

And, and it's been awhile so I may be mistaken, weren't the Enterprise D crew unaware of the existence of the Horta in the first season episode Home Soil? They say something about never encountering silicon-based life before? Like I said, it's been a while.

One was a black field with gray outline that contained a giant amoeba-like single-cell lifeform.
The other was a blue cloud-like object that was created by an apparently energy-based lifeform.

RIKER: Data, is there any record anywhere of any occurrence even vaguely similar to this?
DATA: Accessing. Negative, sir. There is no record of any Federation vessel encountering anything remotely like this.

Saying that it's not even remotely vaguely similar is wrong though, that's a fair point.

Aren't they different? They're only superficially similar:

TOS introduced a large, moving, complex creature as the first silicon-based lifeform discovered.
TNG only said the terraformers thought the small, immobile, simple-structured silicon crystals that seemed to simply reflect light weren't life by any definition they ever heard.
It's like finding out that the graphite in your pencil or the diamond in your ring are alive, which is not anything we'd expect, although we know many carbon-based lifeforms.

Personally, I was always bothered by every time they said a particular ship didn't match anything in their databases, and then it turns out to be one of the frequently reused starship models, like the Merchantman or the freighter or even the triangle ship everyone uses.

I guess Starfleet has some very crappy recognition software.

It operates off of Microsoft IFF reference tags, not visuals. It's glitchy as hell but cheap to apply. Latest patch will add Merchantman type 3325 to the database.

My guess that murf is a Subspace Mesomorph.
He certainly acts a lot like a pet, and having some sort of subspace aspect would help explain the indestructibility (he exists on more than a physical plane) and how he can hold a massive volume of matter and energy like the protocore's contents within his small frame. Much like the subspace pockets with in the timepod the NX-01 found, murf is bigger on the inside.

VERY good guess. Seems totally plausible.
