News Coronavirus Pandemic Information and Support Group

Posted this in the 'Things that frustrate us all' thread, thought I'd post it here as well since it relates to Covid.
So, a little bit of drama this afternoon at work.
Customer (and I use the term lightly) came into the store; first, he refused to wear the mask provided to him and started talking about unlawful mask mandates and how the Supreme Court said that he didn't have to wear one, anti-vax, etc.
So, in order to get him out the store as quickly as possible, the manager asked him what parts he wanted to buy. He wanted to purchase a jack stand, go out into the parking lot and use it on his car, then return it for a refund (which you can't do); at which point the manager asked him to leave.
As he was leaving, he proceeded to knock over every floor display stand on his way out the door; he then picked up a rock, threw it at the windshield of the Nissan Frontier, shattering it, climbed up onto the hood, jumped up and down on it, denting it, then sped off in his car.
Manager called the police and filed a criminal mischief report.
It could have been worse, he could thrown rocks at all three delivery vehicles, then we'd have no way to deliver parts unless we used our own vehicles or borrowed one from another store.
Or, he could have thrown the rock through one of the store windows, attacked/assaulted one of the employees, or pulled out a gun and started firing.
People keep saying we're turning a corner on this pandemic. I don't see how with people like him.
Just wear the fucking mask for God's sake.

Jesus man, that's terrible. Sorry you have to deal with assholes like that.

Ugh, what a dirty thing. It's disgusting how entitled anti-vaxxers have become. I feel sorry for what you and your store had to go through. :(

Kind of reminds me of the early days of the pandemic, when a friend had had their vehicle spit on right on the door handle. It's disgusting to think about even without the pandemic going on.

I doubt even those that follow the rules re: masks etc.. particualr like them, but many will understand the more the rules are followed the sooner we might get out of this.

Re: the Sprueme Court (I'm guessing US) and mask mandates, don't people realise shops are private property and as such can impose any restrictions so long as they don't discrimante. No Mask is just the same as a rule say like No Shirt No Service.

From a "Freedom" point of view you are free to risk your life what you are not free to do however is risk other peoples lifes.

Which is what I don't understand. We've had No Shirt, No Shoes rules for decades. Why all of a sudden does wearing a mask equate to somehow taking your freedom away.

Because it does take your freedom away. We are also are not free to urinate in the middle of the store, even without a sign. It's the old problem that nobody minds having a great many limitations to freedom until they are limited just a little bit more.

Freedom is about being able to live and let live, but freedoms certainly should end where one person's "live" causes others to die. For years nonsmokers had to risk harm, discomfort and even death for the freedom of others to smoke wherever the hell they wanted to. Offices, bars, restaurants and airplanes were full of a hanging haze of secondhand smoke. Things are a lot different now on that issue, yet still the same on the general principle of "don't tell me what to do".

I've read/re-read Ken Follets Kingsbridge books the last year. In the fall I was on World Without End. I was shocked how, in the book, during the black death, the characters all made the same arguments anti-maskers/anti lockdown people are making now. I know it's fiction, but it was written 15 years ago, long before Covid, which is why it was so surprising.

History repeats itself. It was even the same case during the 1918 pandemic, though part of that excuse is a lack in understanding how viruses work vs any real intentional wrongdoing.

In other news, sometime around December, I'd posted about a local woman who'd been accosted and harassed while taking her son to to get vaccinated, anti-vaxxers with bullhorns shouting that she was murdering her child and committing genocide, and the story itself became a national news story. Today in a bid of good news, Canada's Prime Minister made it illegal to intimidate doctors, nurses and patients, or to obstruct them from providing care or seeking treatment, punishable by a penalty of a max 10 years imprisonment or indictment, in a bid to ""further protect health care workers, those who assist them, and persons seeking health services. The new intimidation offence is meant to address circumstances where a health care worker, or person seeking health services, is subject to any intimidating conduct. This could include threats, or other forms of violence, that are intended to provoke fear to interfere with the duties of a health care worker, or to impede a person from receiving health care services."

I'm hoping other governments around the world can follow suit.

I hope he gets caught! What an asshat. Did the Frontier belong to a customer or employee? They can file separate charges.

The Frontier is the store delivery vehicle. It'll be out of commission for a few days until the store manager can file all the necessary paperwork with Corporate to get the window replaced.

Fatigue and compliance have been settling in. Things are not being sanitized. The early fear that anything you touch could give you COVID is completely gone.

But isn't that a good thing? I thought the science had been telling us for a while now that the risk from fomite transmission is pretty low. The experts have been telling us that we should be putting an end to hygiene theatre and focus more on masking, reducing contacts, improved ventilation, and other measures to help protect against aerosols.

Well, the fever I had from Saturday night to Monday morning was pretty intense, but I seem to be on the far side of it. Today's the first day where I've had the energy to get up and get dressed and do something about the pile of laundry that's been piling up, not the least of which are the nasty bed sheets I've been sweating in.
