Spoilers Interesting Comments by Gates McFadden about Appearing in Picard

I don’t think that was probably meant as a hard and fast rule, just a reference to an example of the type of constraints they have to deal with.

It doesn’t seem at all unlikely that there would be instances where there would be conflict preventing overlap, and instances where there wouldn’t be.

precisely. Crusher appearing on prodigy (as a hologram!) doesn’t really seem to me like an issue for Picard. On the other hand, I can’t imagine crusher appearing on LDS without their team checking on where the character should be at that time.

It probably isn't. It is these new shows ironing out the details as they explore this new era of Trek, which wasn't present when Short Treks were being present, and new shows were in development. Each show setting its clear path forward is a good thing in terms of production values.

And, Beverly not appearing is a nonissue.

precisely.

Agreed, Beverly appearing, or not appearing on Picard is not an issue at all, and they do seem to want each show to have its own space to occupy, but they don’t seem to be totally siloed away from one another either.

And we know we’re still getting some overlap, as
Okona had a non-speaking cameo in Lower Decks this season, and is going to appearing in a more substantial guest role (or at least, a speaking part) on Prodigy
but I would think major characters will probably stick to one show or another.

OMG, why?! He was one of the most annoying characters in Trek history, from one of the very worst episodes in the whole franchise.

I still think that there was a misunderstanding here and the two animated shows were mixed up, that he won’t appear on prodigy. But happy to be proven wrong!

‪‪I don’t know, the actor both referred to Prodigy by name, and as a Nickelodeon show, and he brought both of those facts up, he wasn’t led on by the interviewer, and most importantly, he mentioned he had dialogue and interacted with the show’s leads, and neither of those things happen in his appearance on Lower Decks.

‪‪I know that ‪‪I could easily be wrong as well, but all things considered, ‪‪I think we can take the actor’s comments at face value at this point.

Thing is, didn't his description of the plot seem more like Lower Decks than Prodigy? Regardless, it's possible he could have recorded lines for Lower Decks which ended up deleted. I guess we'll know for certain if Okona does indeed show up on Prodigy.

‪‪When the news was first reported, before I listened to the interview, I had thought it was probably some confusion, and meant to be LD as well. But after listening to him talk about it on the podcast interview for myself I really don’t think that makes any sense.

And all Campbell said about the plot was that the show’s female lead was taken with/into Okona, and that her being taken with Okona irritated the show’s male lead, and honestly, at this point that doesn’t sound like Mariner and Boimler at all to me. ‪‪I can’t see Mariner falling for his ladies man schtick at all, and so far Boimler hasn’t shown that kind of jealousy or interest re: Mariner.

On the other hand, Dal’s ego is so fragile, ‪‪I can see him not loving seeing Gwyn, or anyone on the ship really, being enamored with a dashing starship captain.

“It’s a time-travel story and all good time-travel tales are emotional at their core, and speak to something that’s happening with your main character,” Matalas explains. “So we started by asking ourselves the question of season one: how do we deconstruct Captain Picard? What don’t we know about him? Why is he on a vineyard by himself with a dog? Why did he never marry Beverly Crusher and have a family of 10? Those are jumping-off points to answer some of those personal mysteries.”

Guess we may not have seen the last of Beverly ;)

Another interesting (to me) bit:

“It will sound extraordinarily facile,” Goldsman volunteers, “but the idea of season two of Picard is that the only thing that actually transcends time – and I don’t mean time travel alone, I also mean emotional time, the kind of stuck in time that comes from trauma – the only thing that transcends time and which heals is love.”

Probably just where I am emotionally right now, but that hit home.

This made me laugh:

“It was about how you tell a story about Q that’s unexpected, and not the same Loki-esque shenanigans that we are used to."

Loki and Q - *there's* a chicken-and-egg conundrum!

FWIW, it hit home for me as well. :)

That is an interesting quote: although there is a blink and you'll miss it moment in the latest trailer where Picard and Laris seem to be about to kiss.

That being said, I do think Gates McFadden (and LeVar Burton) was being honest when she said they won't be appearing in season two. But I have a feeling she's in season three.

The Laris scene, if it is indeed how it looks, really makes me wonder if Picard is married to her in the grim timeline.

We'll see when it happens.

If he didn't speak on LD, I think it's safe to assume he'll speak on Prodigy (he recorded dialogue for A show).
