Spoilers Interesting Comments by Gates McFadden about Appearing in Picard

The current season is about Picard "moving on", but still dealing with things from his past. Besides, S1 was all about how 2400 Picard was still hung up on 2378 Data's death.
And about moving on. It would be nice to see Picard move on.

Otherwise, I apparently should try to look up my college sweetheart. It's been only 15 years. I'm sure she hasn't moved on.

In order to move on, he needs to deal with demons from his past. That's the story. Sorry if it's not what you ordered, as you've made crystal clear...

It might give you something to do besides relentlessly badger people who actually enjoy the show.

From what I saw last night (and have read in interviews with the production staff), there are dark things that happened in his youth that will come to light. Last night, we obviously learned one of them is an abusive father.
That didn't come as a shock to me. But, again, that's a familial unpacking and something that could potentially be done well. But, that has nothing to do with past romances. In my opinion, that is a step to far for past "demons" around romantic relationships when clearly the only thing about Beverly is that they never went further.

Are people truly haunted by past romantic interests they never got with? That's a demon to deal with?

It also goes beyond his dad. Look up "mommy issues". Something else probably happened to instil in Picard a fear of attachment.
I could write a long post about "attachment difficulties" and have trained extensively in it.

That doesn't change what I think would be unpacked vs. "demons" in past relationships. That's odd, to put it diplomatically.

Demons, issues, difficulties, scars, whatever you wish to call it.

Exactly. Season two is him dealing with whatever baggage he has from childhood, the Borg Queen and Q. I only need so much baggage from a single character.

I think the real problem is that you are waaay to hung up on your work.
It seems to have invaded your enjoyment of life as well as you insisting on taking it out on everybody here.
More I'm a pedantic person around words and some turns of phrase elude me.

My work has zero impact on how I interact here. If it did, well, I wouldn't be here. I'd be banned.

Yeah, well, that high & mighty psychological intellect you constantly like to flash in everybody's face does often seem to border on a "please ban me, I dare you" attitude.

As I said above, you've decided to be Mr. Negative and screw everybody else, because apparently your assessment of all things Trek is completely right and everybody else be damned.
Sorry dude, your no more correct in your assumptions than anybody else around here.
We're all just as likely to be correct as not.

Never said I was. Seriously, I don't think I'm more right, but I'm not going to pause my opinion because it's unpopular here. Unfortunately, that's a lot of my fan experience. I suppose suck it up and deal with it would be the appropriate phrase for myself.

"high and mighty?" Shows you know nothing about me. :(

As for whatever did or didn't happen in his childhood... in an interview, SPS mentions that Picard has "misunderstood" something or "gotten it wrong". So I wonder if no abuse has taken place (at least not domestically), but Little Picard thought it had, and unconsciously lived his life like he did because of it?

IIRC, his biography (yeah, not canon, we all know) also mentioned an abusive dad. After his death, Picard finds out that he himself applied to SFA and was rejected. He was never good enough for many things, while Picard was always the best. That drew his dad's anger.

Perhaps he saw the beginning of a fight and ran away, never seeing the resolution and assuming the worst?

wasn’t Picard rejected the first time around as well?
