Spoilers Interesting Comments by Gates McFadden about Appearing in Picard

Yeah I had the same thought. It's odd given that I think Laris was married to Zhaban in the first season.

I don't think we ever received confirmation that Zhaban's back, too. That's not any sort of definitive evidence that he isn't, but the developers have clearly made a big deal of Laris' return - likely because she became such a fan favorite in just a couple of episodes - but it's still worth noting!

So far based on what we've seen and heard, Zhaban doesn't seem to be returning for season two but as you say it could be because Laris was a fan favorite. My hunch is that in this alternate timeline, Zhaban is either dead or didn't move to Earth.

Billy Campbell named Prodigy, and Nickelodeon, himself. He volunteered the information, and knew them by name.

Yes, it’s plausible he recorded lines for Lower Decks that were cut, but I don’t think there’s any chance someone had him record lines for Lower Decks and told him it was for Prodigy, and for Nickelodeon.

Patrick Stewart said that he's going to have some sort of romantic relationship I read in one of the interviews for season 2 the interview I read that was posted on the Digital spy website. Beverley was briefly mentioned in the article.

LOL, yeah I hope it's a sign we'll see here in season 3.

Warning spoilers for episode one:

It's disappointing that Picard's love life obviously being part of this season, that there still is zero reference to Beverly.

To not mention her there is an oversight by the writers, and it’s a glaring one. I can’t believe the writing team left her out of the picture so far.

Having said that, I loved this episode.

There has to be a Crusher scene after that first episode. I hope she is happy somewhere and we can get some closure with her and Picard's friendship and his missed opportunity with her. I think they're eventually setting him up with Laris to end the show, though. I never would have expected that but I think it's fitting.

Patrick Stewart makes an interesting comment in this interview about the romantic direction of his character (around the 3:00 mark). I'll but a spoiler tag around it for those avoiding any potential spoilers about this or next season:

He says he's enjoyed working with such wonderful 'actresses'...plural, which suggests there might be more than just Laris. Not saying that this means Beverly Crusher but could mean Laris isn't his final "romantic destination."

Additionally if you look at Orla Brady's IG, there is post from last September that somewhat implies she is not in season 3. I have a theory that Laris dies this season (which would make me said). Originally, I thought her saying that Romulans don't mourn like humans, rather they honour departed loved ones by loving deeper, was a way to explain her making the moves on Picard somewhat unexpectedly. But now I'm wondering what if Laris' death is the final catalyst for him to love deeper in the third season with whomever.

The writers of Picard are going on a theme of "Picard moving on with life" which makes sense, but maybe Laris is or isn't who he'll end up with (if anyone). I am a big Beverly/JL shipper and I really would love the show to address that, but my hunch is if/when we see Beverly she may have moved on with her life e.g. married again. I thought his talk with Guinan may have implied he let Beverly get away.

Whenever the possibility of Picard and Crusher getting married surfaces, I'm always reminded of this newscast exchange from the series finale of Seinfeld (can't find a video clip, so the script will have to do):

Geraldo Rivera: Anything else, Jane?

Jane Wells: There also seems to be some friction between Mr. Seinfeld, and Ms. Benes. The rumor is that they once dated, and it's possible that ended badly.

Rivera: Well, ladies and gentlemen, who know, maybe this trial will bring them closer together. Maybe they'll even end up getting married.

The show simply doesn’t need Gates McFadden or the Crusher character.
Why not? The show is about Picard. Beverly Crusher was extremely close and important to him. What it doesn't need are Geordi, Worf, and (arguably) Wesley Crusher.

That being said, I still think the role of the Stargazer CMO in S1 was meant for her, especially since she's the one who diagnosed his brain abnormality in All Good Things.
