Spoilers Interesting Comments by Gates McFadden about Appearing in Picard

I read an interesting article with Gates McFadden on December 14 on Red shirts die and she doesn't know if she'll be in season 3 and wonders why Beverley isn't even mentioned in Picard at all. She'd like to return and like other fans thinks it's odd that it hasn't been addressed yet.

Which other main characters have appeared / been addressed so far? From memory:

Picard, Data, Riker, Troi, Q (S2; also mentioned in S1), Worf (still image in news montage), Guinan (S2)

Am I imagining that Geordi and/or Worf were mentioned in dialog? It does seem odd that both Crushers -- Bev and Wesley -- are missing from the show. Is there some reason Bev wasn't the doctor visiting Picard to talk about his prognosis (esp. since she diagnosed it in the first place)? I know Gates McFadden was undergoing cancer treatments, and thought I'd read this was why she didn't appear.

Yes Geordi LaForge and Worf were mentioned season in one and in the Picard novel by Una McCormack Last Best Hope.

Picard: Funny thing is Guinan, this means you've always known how Beverly was going to die. All the time we've been together, and you didn't even try to stop it!

What do people think now Gates has showed up in Prodigy? More of a chance?

Gates McFadden is in the new episode of Prodigy show Kobayashi Maru and Gates Recorded her lines last year. I'm glad she at least appeared in one of the new Star Trek series.

There were different things that impacted whether a character could appear, like availability or whether they ever spoke the lines that we wanted to use for the Kobayashi Maru, and if they would line up. It was sort of an evolving process of just like, “Well, okay, that character we can’t use because they’re being used on a different show in a season or two,” or “We just don’t have the right dialogue for this other character, for this particular thing.”

So no Beverly in PIC, I guess :(

But Spock has also already been on a Paramount+ / CBS All Access show (Short Treks). So, that doesn't completely mesh. Anyway...

Yes, but things changed. With the new slate of shows it is likely creating specific spaces for each show to operate within, vs. short Treks which were more for filler in the in-between.

They wanna avoid doing conflicting or repetitive things with them, I guess. The writers on PIC and LDS didn't know that the other show also has Riker coming to the rescue at the end of their S1, that's why they started talking to each other now XD

I don’t think that was probably meant as a hard and fast rule, just a reference to an example of the type of constraints they have to deal with.

It doesn’t seem at all unlikely that there would be instances where there would be conflict preventing overlap, and instances where there wouldn’t be.

It probably isn't. It is these new shows ironing out the details as they explore this new era of Trek, which wasn't present when Short Treks were being present, and new shows were in development. Each show setting its clear path forward is a good thing in terms of production values.

And, Beverly not appearing is a nonissue.
