I could be wrong, but I think Gwyn will eventually be made captain. Dal needs to be humbled a bit and busted down to "sidekick" before making a comeback.

He still hadn't saved the crew on the Maru. My guess is something else would happen during the rescue process.
Yeah, the program would probably just keep throwing Klingon ships at him.

That was a dense episode. The Kobayashi Maru test was fun, but it also deepened the mystery of the Protostar itself and whatever Murf is.
The varying quality of the archive dialog was a bit distracting, but given the purpose of it, I don't mind.
It was great to hear new dialog from Gates. She hasn't completely been forgotten about in the modern era.

It kinda irked me that the only series not represented on the holodeck or in the episode was a nod to Enterprise

Seems to maintain the cannon that this test is a no win scenario unless it gets reprogrammed like when Kirk took it the third time
Dal is even more stubborn than Kirk. While he took the test 100+ times, Kirk cheated after failing it the second time
Dal does actually have a very good point that going to the Federation would probably be more problematic than just being on their own. Also keep in mind that due to Prime Directive policies, the Federation cannot interfere in the civil war/dispute/whatever between Gwyn and her father. Dal is absolutely correct that they will lose their nifty ship and then be set up in a Raffi Musiker style trailer for their asylum or whatever.
With Chakotay and others being introduced, I think the aspect of "the previous owners had this ship and it was stolen and morally we should return it to them" is coming into play that will make Dal change his mind about going to the Federation. Also it's interesting that in this case with no ranks in play it's not clear who should be captain. Keep in mind that until practically yesterday Gwyn was literally a slavery upholder and supporter and the real Janeway punished the Equinox crew for less. Dal has problems too. Maybe they should cycle captainship every week or something.
Kirk had a rigorous Starfleet Academy curriculum that he needed to get back to. Dal can just sit in the Protostar all day doing whatever he wants for the most part.
Dal has more discipline than he looks. Anyone else would've jettisoned the Kobayashi Maru nonsense long before the 3rd try and spent hours on the holodeck instead on, uh, you know. But then this is a kids' show.

I think it's far more likely that they would be placed in foster homes or returned to their respective family's.
It's also quite possible that by the time they get back to Federation space, they may be allowed to try out for Star Fleet Academy.
Especially if Holo-Janeway puts in a good word for them with Her report on their travels.
Also, it's pretty obvious that the Writers of the show are grooming Dal to eventually end up being a proper Captain.
Especially with the context of this particular episode.
I did love seeing TOS Uhura using TNG touchscreen controls.
Uhura at the ops console is actually appropriate considering the times Kirk had her take the navigator's chair to help pull the Enterprise out of a dangerous situation.
