It just occurred to me, with the show’s previously stated position in the timeline confirmed onscreen, and the Protostar’s history with Chakotay and Hologram Janeway after being stuck in the middle of Tars Lamora for over 17 years, we have all but confirmed that due to some experimental proto-warp/whatever anomaly Chakotay mentioned in that recording-caused time travel mishap Chakotay ended up stuck, back in time, in the Delta Quadrant.

Absolutely adore the way they designed those classic characters. This show continues to be the most visually striking of any of the series and an unexpected delight every single week.
Spock's lines sounded quite different from another, one near the end was of course from Unification XD
And now they've crossed into or at least got close to the gamma quadrant... who might they meet there...?

Good episode. I would have rated it higher, but the archival audio completely took me out of it. It was especially glaring considering they brought Gates in to record new lines. 7.

That was pretty great, but they really could have used one or two more legacy characters played by still-living actors. There were too many moments where the dialogue exchange didn't flow naturally enough, some of the old clips didn't fit as smoothly as they needed to. They could have eased the burden on the archival audio by giving themselves another character they could have scripted any line for.
Dal remains the big problem of the show for me. Trek's most off-putting lead character, and least compelling lead performance. I hope they get a better handle on him soon. It's impossible to overcome a failed lead.

It was a bit much that they pretty much let Dal beat the Kobayashi Maru test...the last failure was only because of a last-minute random accident.

So are the deceased ones. I was pretty sure the Crusher dialogue was new, though. Was McFadden's appearance announced in advance?
I knew which episode each Spock quote was from while watching...couldn't say for the others.
I loved how Odo's first word was "Hmmph!"

The holodeck program was perfect. It paid tribute to the past series with the various crewmembers, whilst ramping up the humour with Dal's growing anger at the simulation.
The Ent-D looked like a perfect representation.

The greatest tribute yet to Rene Auberjonois. Odo lives again.
Definitely an amazing episode.
I must say again that this show is much better written compared to Discovery and pays better attention to detail.
Dal was exhibiting Boimler's obsession in the holodeck with getting a 'better score'... lol... at least Dal came out of it with better understanding that he needs to listen to his crewmates.
You could tell they took out the voices from other characters (except Gates McFadden's) from other seris and slammed them into this one.
Funny thing is, the audio quality between the characters DOES vary quite a bit... but its the holodeck, so its more or less 'excusable' (even though we know the holodeck would reproduce the characters voices perfectly).
'17 years ago', and confirmation of this show taking place in 2383 (along with Chakotay mentioning an anomaly) indeed suggests temporal mishap... which leaves the question... where are Chakotay and the original crew?
What kind of anomaly was responsible [or what was its role] and who was boarding the Protostar?
Its actually nice to see Chakotay being a captain of the Protostar... I thought he was going to be brought in as a separate captain of his own ship who was looking for the Protostar.
Maybe they will manage to find Chakotay and some of the original crew... and they will take the kids to the Federation... eventually... unless the kids decide to reach the UFP on their own first.
Janeway said they started out in the Delta Quadrant and jumped 4 000 Ly's. Not an impossibility considering she as captain of VOY managed to use the newly developed Quantum Slipstream V2 by the crew which brought them 10 000 Ly's in about 1 minute (but again, excusable since she is a hologram and that particular data may not have been integrated into her memory, or it's part of the classified files the kids would have to spend 'months' sifting through).
Oh, one thing that popped into my head... is it possible the Protostar was dispatched into the D.Q originally to help the Diviner and Gwyn's species?
Could explain why a portion of Janeway's memories were encrypted in the language... unless the Diviner was part of the original crew... or someone who initially asked UFP for help.

The archival audio could potentially be excused because its the holodecks (even though we know the holodeck/computer would have reproduced the characters crews voices perfectly in-universe).
I'm not sure what kind of effort would have to go into cleaning it up to make it less obvious... but its also possible they've kept the original audio as is in order to 'honor' older series.
That was great, but I'm giving it a 9, rather than a 10, mostly because I had some issues with the holodeck scene. I understand what they were going for with showing "historic" crew members, but I think it was a mistake having all of them but Beverly being deceased, and cutting and pasting canned dialogue from old episodes/movies. First, the sound was off - slightly (which I can chalk up to the holodeck). But more importantly, the relationship of some of the lines to what Dal was saying was kind of tangential at times. It's amazing they got it to work as well as they did, but couldn't they have given Takai some work or something?
Also, Odo wasn't ever a member of Starfleet. They shoulda used Nog if they wanted to have a tribute to a dead DS9 cast member.

I don't normally rate episodes, but I would say this was not a great one, and have given it a 5. I understand everyone's delight in seeing some classic characters and tributes to great and beloved actors, but I actually very much disliked the scenes on the holodeck. The archived sounds were just too obviously that. I found myself thinking, "What?" after every line, because I couldn't get my brain to process the clashing input with the fast-paced yet boring Kobayashi Maru test. I was trying to gauge the character models (great work except Spock) as well.
All that and Dal was so annoying. I want to like him, but I find myself not understanding what he contributes to the crew. He's the "captain" but seems to have few moments of genuine ability. It's a role undeserved, and as Pog reminded us, self-appointed. I think I like him best when he's humbled and showing empathy, but those require slogging through tiresome scenes of bravado and comeuppance. (insert obligatory 'not target audience' self-admonition) I find myself wanting to say SHUT UP to him constantly. The actor isn't all that great, and compared to Kate Mulgrew's textured voice and decades of experience, or the inquisitive and heartfelt Zero's voice or the depth of sadness and loneliness in Gwyn's deliveries, his performance comes off as flat, even in his best moments. I think Rok-Tak's voice work has been better, even though the actor's a literal child.

The simulation is programmed so you LOSE, no matter what.
I don't think it would have mattered which part of the console he touched, it still would have fired a torpedo.
The only way for him to win at that point would have been to end the program immediately.
But then he would not have received his final evaluation and would have essentially "lost" anyway by the program's standard.
