Spoilers My main suspects for the anomaly.

Symbolically it's Space Moby Dick, and Book is Captain Ahab.

It may just be as unknowable as the Doomsday Machine, with origins never clearly defined.

V'ger would probably digitize everything in its path, not pulverize.

Nagilum would likely gloat to the galaxy on all subspace frequencies.

It may be the remnants of the Mirror Universe bleeding through. Or the collapse of the Kelvin timeline. Kovich might have some scenes coming up to infodump...

Nope and nope. It’s not going to be a shameless pile of fanwank like bringing back V’Ger. I can’t even figure out where people get this idea from. It will be it’s own thing.

You heard it here first. Take it to the bank now. #mytheoryrulz

I don't think I've ever noticed before but we both have the "1966-" thing in our sig, haha.

I don’t think the thing is Vger/Decker. But it could be another thing from the machine planet. I would think that the spacecraft and its resulting energy field that they built for Voyager was a token example of their abilities, built to help out a kindred spirit. This new thing could be an example of their REAL tech. Some kind of gravity drive that can hurl solar systems through space.Perhaps a scaled down version of this tech will eventually be the answer tothe UFPs propulsion issues.

It won't be V'Ger anymore than The Red Angel = Iconians or Vulcans = Ancient Synths. It'll be it's own thing. Perhaps the tears of Discovery's crew seeped into the Mycelium network and - due to magic mycelial network reasons - the tears retained the emotional turmoil of the crewmembers who shed them (not entirely without precedent - see Culber's resurrection).

Anyhoo, the mass of tears coalesced in the network to form a massive, angst-ridden anomaly which has now ruptured space-time and is wrecking havoc across the galaxy. Discovery must enter the anomaly and talk it down (represented by emotionally distraught mycelial doppelgangers of the DISCO crew).

Or maybe Tuvix is finally unleashing his revenge on the Galaxy (how he thwarted Janeway's execution and survived 800 years will be explained in a 2 minute whirlwind of exposition/technobabble).

How convenient that Vger is trying to convince us it's not V'ger. What are you hiding?! Don't wait for the translation, because this is in English. Answer me now!;)

As near as I can tell, the only reason people are suggesting V'ger is that it's a massive blue and white cloud-like entity with a disk shape in the middle. But since V'ger turned into pure energy centuries ago, this would kind of be a step back for it.

Given the anomaly seemingly changed course and speed, I fully expect to be some kind of living being, but I agree that it will be something unique to Discovery and not something we've seen before.

There's gonna be a ship in the centre a la V'Ger, but on that ship? Oh, let's say,

The Janeway/Paris abandoned Salamander children.

Or maybe Okuna, whose levels of Outrageousness have grown exponentially over the past 800 years to form the world-ending Anomaly.
"It could hold a crew of... tens of thousands of Okonas."
"Or a crew of a thousand Okonas ten times as Outrageous!"
"And don't even get me started on the salamander math. I'm a doctor, not a... uhhhh salamander scientist."

In the case the anomaly is either Nagilum himself or another illusion he created, Kwejian might actually still be around.

Maybe the whole ordeal is a new "experiment" of him... ;)

Could possibly also explain how the "Calypso" Discovery comes to be. Maybe another one of his illusions?
