That's because Berman era Trek had a more unified consistency. Different warp effects, transporter effects, increases or decreases in budgets, different effects houses, all of that makes for a bit of a mishmash of sfx. A different effect doesn't mean it's from another timeline, it just means they have a better budget and technology has improved in the intervening years.
Star Trek has a history of playing with its warp effects, especially from film to film.
TOS Remastered didn't even have warp effects except for stars streaking by faster than they normally would.

Exactly, so comparing warp effects on two franchise eras that are roughly 10 years apart, in which time CGI made a massive leap forward, isn't really fair to either of them.
They're not even consistent now. LD uses Berman Era warp effects, DSC a different one that's more like a Kelvin Timeline warp effect, PIC uses a blend of the Berman and DSC looks and Prodigy has a normal warp jump reminiscent of the 1987-2005 period of Trek but once at warp or engaging the protowarp engine engages it gets all Kelvin Timeline in aesthetic.
This show has been a wonderful surprise thus far. I watch it every Thursday with my family and everyone looks forward to it. It’s fun, colorful, and exciting while also being pretty smart and intriguing. My two young boys really love it.

TNG and the TNG films had different transporter effects, if I remember correctly, so it wasn't that consistent.
So, another enjoyable episode. Except for the fake Janeway, who left me disquieted.
The level of independent thought she seems to be capable of is very inconsistent. In the last episode, with a touch of a button, Gwyn changed her behavior. Here she acted as if she were the real Kathryn Janeway and even asked the computer (isn't she part of it? Why would she need to talk to it at all?) if her clearance as a "former captain" would work. What does that mean? Holo Janeway was never the captain of anything. I can't tell if the program is already fully sapient but also insane, simultaneously aware of her existence as something separate from the "real" Janeway (I was super surprised she referred to the original as "real") and yet also believes she is Janeway. And what does it mean for her to think her way into a solution and actually tell herself to think?
It's probably too much to ask for the show to address Fakeway's sense of self. But maybe the interaction with the real Chakotay might be interesting if they meet.

also, the movies had different effects as well.
not to mention that beyond had a slightly different effect than the two previous movies...
We could chalk-up the last three movies being different due to Scotty constantly fiddling with his beloved "Bairn's".

And I am particularly irked at Discovery writers for making that stupidity of a future which looks more like its fitting for the 25th century (with majority of the stuff VOY acheived 'conveniently forgotten' or just 'handwaved').
I'd prefer it if Disco jumped into an alternate universe future from the 23rd century Prime Timeline... that would leave the prime timeline universe future open.
Or (and I know this could be seen as controversial), maybe Prodigy will erase the 32nd century Discovery future from existence (one could only hope), or at least put it in a separate 'pocket universe'.
I have to agree though that Prodigy seems to be using Warp effects more consistent with what was shown in the Kelvin timeline and Discovery.
I think it looks a bit much like a technological wormhole tunnel rather than an evolution of a Warp effect (which would technically be more like a 'lensing effect').
A bit of a change to that effect to something more consistent would be better if you ask me, but Prodigy is a great show thus far so I think we can 'excuse' it for using a different Warp effect (who knows, maybe the CGI department will change it during this season or next if they think it doesn't look right - but they chose it for a reason).

At least they give a decent in character reason for Gwen's decision at the end. But yeah, a 'Protostar engine' (that the main caretaker Holograms knows nothing about...) - Yeah Star Trek will never be anything close to hard science fiction.

Yes, of course Gwyn was always going to be betrayed by Daddy and then turn on him, but I enjoyed how they played it all the same. It was interesting to see him struggle with this decision just the *tiniest* bit. He also called the ship, "salvation", which makes me wonder even more why he wants it so badly.

I almost Homer Simpson'd myself on the reveal: "proto" + "star". D'OH!

I loved Dal's honest talk with Gwyn. When it's just the 2 of them, he doesn't seem to feel the need to BS. Back in the premiere, it was obvious they had some history with each other - perhaps, given the lack of translators (smart dictator there), she was the only one he could talk to. I like seeing them become friends though - they each have traits the other is lacking.

I was thinking about that. She did it back at the prison with "cat boots" and "cahoots", but she speaks an insanely high number of languages, so I don't think it's a mistake. I think it's something Gwyn has chosen to do around Dal sometimes to appear more vulnerable/not as Super Smart and/or to make him laugh.
Just for the record, I've liked all the various warp effects, including this one.
