The guy in Star Trek III referred to himself as "the Commander of Starfleet" iirc. Then in ST6 we had the "C in C."

In DS9, Weyoun said something about the "Starfleet Commander"... but then Jaresh implied he was the Commader in Cheif...

I just view the highest-ranking Starfleet Admiral at any given time to be the equivalent of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. As high as you can get in the military chain of command but answerable to the elected civilian government of the Federation.

Much better than I was expecting. Though the fact I woke up with a bit of a migraine really didn't help here.

    I do have a prediction:

Since they did mention the Kirk but didn't actually show it (at least I didn't notice it) I think they're planning on a reveal later in the season, especially given that they've gone through all the trouble of designing the model. Add to that the name of the episode and the presidents rather empty speech at the end -- that is she saying the words without really understanding the wisdom -- I think the 'spirit' of ol' Jimmy is going to show up at some point.

I think at this point Michael is only vaguely aware of Kirk's existence. It's safe to assume she read up on Spock as soon as she found a reliable Federation historical database. But I don't think she read too much because it would just be a reminder of a life she lost. So I don't think she's aware of just how deep Spock's relationship with him became. From her perspective he filled a void in Spock's heart (yes) that she left. So in a way, they're kindred spirits.

I also don't think she knows that he is the only cadet whoever beat the no-win scenario. And I do think this is going to come up again. Because here's the thing: Despite all the president's lecturing, Michael handled the entire situation exactly as our boy JTK would have. And, for the Pavel's gun of it all, I think there's too much here for it to all be a coinky-dink.

I could be wrong though. I usually am.

The only type of regime where the supreme commander of the armies is a soldier, is a junta, IOW a dictatorship.

What's at the end/other side of the S4 Discovery anomaly? This question may or may not be applicable to the general wide ranging term anomaly but the episode(which I haven't seen yet but will see as soon as possible and I read the script) does include a black hole, and if specified as subspacial has a higher chance of having a destination at the end like a temporal timeline or a subspace domain.

Why does everything have to be relevant to something else?

If someone says to you "Nice weather." do you jump to his throat because you can't connect it to anything else?

^ You're trying too hard to make this a thing. Just drop it.
Well, yeah, pretty much, at least insofar as bringing it up here goes, since it has absolutely no relevance to the story and adds nothing constructive to the ongoing discussion.

Thinking about it, the President's vague talk about experiments in alternative propulsion combined with massive gravitational abnormalities, and her insisting on coming along, should raise all kinds of red flags. If Book's homeworld was indeed destroyed by a Federation experiment, it's not going to be pretty.

About to put on the season premiere. Watching bitter-ass Robert Meyer Burnett having a total fucking unhinged, losing-his-goddamned-shit Twitter meltdown over this show right now is simply glorious, and never stops being entertaining.

F*** that guy. I mean he's as entitled to his opinion as anyone else, but after the spoilers he let loose into the wild last season...

    Yeah, f*** that guy.

That was a nice way to check in with the characters. The plot was pretty routine Trek rescue mission, but no complaints there.

So glad they've finally put Burnham in the centre seat. They really should have done it a couple of years ago. She is a natural.

The President made an interesting debut. Obviously she's going to be a major player, and insisting on attending a dangerous mission that reveals a massive galactic disaster is sounding all sorts of alarm bells.

My heart did sink a bit at yet another galaxy-threatening thing. I think the consensus last year was that this kind of mystery box storytelling was getting rather stale, but here we are again.

I do hope they are leading us down a different path this time. We shall see...

Burnham: In the name of the Federation Council of the United Federation of Planets, you're under arrest, President.

Rillak: Are you threatening me, Captain Burnham?

Burnham: The Council will decide your fate.

    Rillak: I am the Council!

    Burnham: Not yet.

    Rillak: It's treason, then...

If you say "Star Trek" backwards, it sounds like "Brian Brophy"....
