While I don't expect the show become one of the Great Trek's like TOS,TNG,DS9 and The Orville I think I got some hope maybe for this season. Burnham as Captain does erase some of the issues of the past of her always going over the heads of Lorca,Pike and Saru and always having to be right and them wrong. Even the writers are probably 'Dam they are making fun of the crying all the time on the net. We got to pull back on the melodrama" Lets amp of the action. Make Burnham more like Kirk and less like EMO Spock. Put a thorn in her side with the Federation President for some internal conflict. We never really had that on the show. Even Lorca and Mirror Georgiou loved her. Lets put someone on board who is critical of her.

I dunno, I think it's bad look that Michael shows an utter disdain and disrespect for the civilian elected democratic authority of the Federation.

Whenever military science fiction has an officer show that, it has uncomfortable authoritarian overtones.

I don't know, the Jedi Council over at that other star franchise regularly showed contempt for the civilian elected democratic authority, even after he was granted emergency powers by the legislative body, and this was portrayed in a heroic light.

The Jedi were not heroic in the prequels. That's funny.

I don't think they will make the President a bad person. I do think she has something going on though we don't know about. Like maybe she had to do some bad things during The Burn to protect the Federation and nobody knows about it. Maybe she even brought back Section 31 or Section 31 was still up and going even when the Federation was sidelined.

Earth Prime Minister Nathan Samuels in ENT was given the controversial edge of having once been a supporter or sympathizer of the Terra Prime movement so this wouldn't be the first time in Trek that the head of government was seen through slightly skeptical eyes by a lead character. Archer and his officers weren't sure what to make of Samuels having such a potential conflict of interest in dealing with Terra Prime.

Star Trek IV was a special situation since Kirk did something that saved the whole of the Federation.
Here though… I feel this would be up to the CinC and the other Starfleet higher ups.

As stressed in DS9 when President Jaresh-Inyo has to surrender his authority over Earth's defenses to Admiral Leyton when he's convinced that it's the only way to ensure that Earth can be protected from the Changeling threat.

I thought it was incredible..! From a visual standpoint, this was one of the most movie-like episodes I've ever seen..! Incredible scope, and the VR-wall is really adding so much..! Music, costumes, make-up: all of the artistic elements were perfectly placed in my book..!

But the story and arcs were really well done as well; I was genuinely intrigued for 50 minutes and it left me wanting more! Cannot wait 'till next week..!

The way I interpreted that is, Bill was the top ranked Admiral in Starfleet, but the actual commander-in-chief is, and always has been, the President of the Federation.

In a free society, you really can't have it any other way. Ultimate control over the military should always rest with the civilian government.

I agree with this as well. When I first saw the Fed Prez and that no one wanted her on board I was like "oh no, this is another 'military knows better than civilians' story". And that sucks too. But that doesn't take away from the fact that 31st C federation is bland, aimless, and not a body worth belonging to or that Michael is being treated unfairly compared to her peers.

Well, Leyton was engaged in a criminal conspiracy and attempted military coup....so you can't really take anything he says or does at face value.
