To me it felt more like a Star Wars story than a Star Trek story, and I don't say that as a bad thing. We'll see what future episodes bring. I like the fact that they let these kids establish themselves as capable characters who are able to escape on their own before introducing the Janeway hologram. Looking forward to next week.

I agree with the criticisms on the lead character. I hope they tone the character down a bit and spread the focus amongst the rest of the characters more.

There are also humans that are very, very short. Pog could be the equivalent of a little person.

If Bill Sha--I mean, Captain Kirk was going to have a holographic likeness portrayed of him, do you think he's going to program it with how he looks presently or how he looked in TOS? ;)

Pretty sure I saw a couple of Lurians in the episode. One of them being forced to look at Zero's true form.

So that was Morn the slavers used Fugitive Zero on to turn crazy/brainwash? Brutal. What kind of kid's show is this? This isn't the DS9 sequel we asked for, what's next, Sisko as a random assimilated Borg drone?

It seems like a very well-made kids show, which as a veteran (survivor?) of crap like the Paw Patrol I really appreciate! I think my son will at least give it a shot. One thought I had was how cool Trek tech (ships, etc.) can look in animation without the limitations on those types of things in live action.

I’m still not sure what to make out of this, but it was mildly enjoyable to me.

The good: the basic plot is potentially interesting, the visuals of the ship are great and Giacchino’s music is fantastic as always.

The bad: it’s obviously a kid’s show. Everything is very simple and happens too easily. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as getting kids interested is one of the objectives of the show.

The ugly: a chose one plot?! I really hope not!

Observations: the Star Wars influence is obviously huge, the robot bad guy is basically general grievous and it’s not the only thing.
So the protostar was built to be manned by a non federation crew or what? I’m a bit confused.

Maybe you need to rewatch other Trek shows/movies if you think their plots were any different from this. ;)

This is the third episode (after Living Witness and The Young Hunter) to not feature a single human character. Just a holographic human.

I'm not sure I see a "chosen one" plot here. Is it with Gwyn? Dal just seems like a random nobody so far who was in the right place at the right time.

Dal has a bit of it with the "unknown species" angle, a la Kal-El (Dal R'El...) and Star Wars analogues like Rey.

I'm thinking the inordinate amount of familiar species in this part of the galaxy at this specific prison is a plot point to be revealed as we go along. BadGuy knows of the Federation and is looking for a Federation ship, so he could be specifically looking for alpha quadrant species and the means at which they are appearing in this area might be built into that mystery.

I’m betting this area of the galaxy borders on the Delta/Beta Quadrants to explain why we’re seeing so many familiar species. What other explanation could make sense?

On the other hand, what would a Kazon be doing so far away from his people’s space? Kazon Space is literally on the other end of the quadrant.

Space is big, though, and these species are all several decades apart, according to Voyager. I can get maybe a Lurian or even a Caitian colony being very far flung, but Medusans? Tellarites? The large number doesn't add up.
