It's also possible he's just short.

Admittedly possible, though that would be like the 1st percentile of what we've seen so far of Tellarites.

I mean, he comes up to stomach level on Dal and Gwyn...who are both shorter than Janeway, who was also not particularly tall.

Interesting, not quite sure what to make of it yet.
    I gave it a 6.

I have a feeling that the rest of the episodes are going to be lacking compared to the pilot, just because of their much shorter length.
Taken as a whole, this will probably be fun to watch, but being broken up into short weekly episodes is going to detract from it's appeal.
I think they made a mistake with this one, it should have been released all at once.

Kids today aren't really geared toward weekly episode viewing like my generation.
I can see the interest level dropping quite quickly as the weeks go on.

It was something. I guess I approached it wrong. About 50% of lower decks episodes, I can show my 4 year old (after pre-watching) and she enjoys them. This premiere scared her with it's themes. The villain is too evil and dominant of the theme in the show for a star trek + kids show.

One critique I have (and it’s something I feel about each of the new shows except LDS as well as the Kelvin films) is that it feels closer to Star Wars than to Star Trek.

Don’t get me wrong, I like it. But I also long for the days of episodes like The Measure of a Man. I think those days are gone for good and I wonder if any of the new shows will have any truly classic Trek episodes.

Definitely a kids show, but definitely one I'd watch. This is likely to be at the far reaches of how young a show I can watch. The visuals and music are fantastic, and apart from how kiddy the writing is, I love the set up and the mystery. The world building is just light enough that you can assume some things and hope for clarity on others. This felt like the Clones Wars of JJ movies in look and feel. I hope we the grown-ups get at least reasonably clear answers to some of our lore questions.

Janeway got one line near the end of the episode. It's a lot different from Lower Decks. It's not even the same type of cartoon. This looks like computerized animation. A great deal of action and very little dialogue. How did a Starfleet ship end up unmanned in the middle of what looks like a big asteroid without its crew, in the Delta Quadrant, and long after the return of Voyager since it contains a Janeway hologram?

That's been a part of "kid's" shows for a while now. One need only look at Pinocchio to see how far back this trend goes. Or Rapunzel, where the villain is literally the maternal figure of the main character dragging her in chains. Among other examples.

I'm 44 years old and don't have any kids and I loved it. It's a really fun action/adventure story that doesn't talk down to its audience. It demonstrates a good lesson about judging people by their appearances, but it isn't preachy about it. The animation and voice acting are excellent.

I certainly don't expect the show to be bogged down with 50 years of canon, but I'm also curious to see where it slides in and what it adds to the Star Trek universe.

I, for one, am thrilled that Star Trek is reaching out in so many different directions these days.

the theme is stuck in my head already and I've only heard it three times
once when they released the intro those few weeks back, and I watched the 2 episodes twice

    He's a Tellarite.
It's in the episode and the pre-release marketing material.

There's also a clip from the next episode where holo-Janeway explicitly calls him a Tellarite.

They used reverse psychology on him. Apparently, the best way to get a Tellarite to do what you want them to. This episode reminded me of "The Pegasus"... Did they experiment with phase-cloak technology again?

In the opening credits that was released, it showed the Protostar have a secret engine that propels it faster than warp. Perhaps it is a combination of both plus bad luck.
