TBH, while I have nothing against Saru, he'd be my first choice to get the ax if someone needs to die for drama. Sure, he's a rare alien character that looks alien, but beyond looks, his actual species is somehow among the most boring in the franchise. And after the Mirror Universe arc, I'm much more interested in a Kelpian in my soup than in a story. Just my opinion.
Why say "a character like Saru" when you mean "Saru"? The title already implied that you were being a little facetious, because why call out a specific character at all, but then you don't even suggest killing any of the other characters.

A character like Saru is more of a reference to a series regular then specific to Saru though Saru would also be my personal choice as well. Mostly because I wouldn't want to get ride of the actor. Jett Reno I guess would also be a good choice. She is popular enough for her death to hit home while also easy in away because the actress is hard to get on the show because I think her career is blowing up and doesn't like to travel because of Covid. Culber is another. People like him but he is in the end stuck in the thankless role of ships doctor. Problem is they already played this idea so it wouldn't be good to do it again. I simply don't want to loose Stamets and Tilly so they are off the list. Would love it to be Burnham but she is the series lead so I know it will not happen. Adira and Grey are new still so to soon. Book would make sense I guess but don't care about the character that much so his death wouldn't hit home.

Plus it's pretty fucking insensitive to what's going on in the United States (and has been going on, but we're finally giving it the attention it's due). It's my one hang up with Picard. Right off the bat they killed off The Black Guy. Unless they were trying to draw a parallel between the Zhat Vash and the Police, that move was in very poor taste. To put it into an understatement. They shouldn't have done that.
If I was running the show I would change the focus and build it around a 4 person team operating of the ship. Tilly,Stamets, Adira and maybe a kickass Ferengi guy would make up the team. Saru would be the kind of General Hammond of the show. Detmer,Owosekun,Culber and that one guy from the Short Treks who was living on the future ship would be the secondary team. Admiral Vance, Reno, Gray and Cronenberg would be as needed guest stars.
Killing Burnham would be equally insensitive. You know, come to think of it I can't remember ever seeing on this board someone posting that they would like a white female character to die. I legitimately can't. I've seen things like 'Janeway should have been sent to jail' but I've never seen people clamoring for her death, like a couple of people in this thread.
Just adds to my theory that some people are fine seeing a black woman do the sci-fi equivalent of answer the telephone but heaven help the black woman that is outspoken and tells a white man what to do.

Someone's going to hit back with "But I like Lower Decks!" Except the key difference is Lower Decks isn't meant to be taken seriously, while Discovery is. The Cerritos also represents the bottom of Starfleet, while the Discovery doesn't. So Lower Decks is less threatening to their overall point of view.

The attitude towards Michael is just so bizarre. It's not enough to reduce her time and focus on other characters. Nope, let's kill her. She's too good at everything.
She doesn't have to die. She can transfer off. The main idea is to take the best aspects of the show and restructure it like Fear of the Walking Dead did when they replaced Madison with Morgan. Or Babylon 5 with Sheridan over Sinclair. I think the show has plenty of interesting characters but is held back do to Burnham being boring. But even if do keep her you can also still find other ways to restructure. Make her a drug addict or erase everyone's memories of her. Kill her but keep a Android version on the show. Stuff like that.

Nice backpedal, but that is not what i got from your comments 'would love for it to be burnham', while implying that the deaths of white female characters would engender an emotional response from you that wasn't sheer delight.
Burnham isn't a good character. That's why it would be good to get ride of the character. Death or not. If the character stays then they should try and retool the character. But they have had 3 seasons and nothing has worked so far. This has nothing to do with her race or gender. The character simply isn't that interesting IMO. The show does have good elements in it though. Stamets,Saru and Tilly being the big one. Plus the LGBTQ character stuff tends to be when the show is best written. It's the plots and badly written series lead what hurts the show the most. Also I am not slamming people who do like the show. This is just my thoughts. The initial idea of the thread was even more about what they could do on this season. Kill a main character for drama or kill everyone but 5 and your left with a Skeleton crew and the odds are against you and everyone is dealing with the trauma of all the others dying. It would be pretty dark and grim but that doesn't mean bad. Next season for variety do a comedic theme season were the ship is taken over by a Q. Then follow that up with the final season where you bring closure. Travel back to the their old time to get something to save something else in their new time. Bump in Mudd, Lorca, Ash, etc.
There were a lot of bad ideas in this post but this is the probably the second worst, after killing off the lead of the show!
