Speaking of giving up picks for someone who never played for them, here's something that happened. There was an unheralded, lowly-drafted QB named Greg Barton who sat on the Lions bench for three seasons (NFL stats: 1 attempt, 0 completions). The Eagles were so enamored with Barton they traded two 2s and a 3rd for him in 1971, even though he was about to become a free agent. They also traded away starting QB Norm Snead to the Giants (where he made the Pro Bowl). Barton was actually looking forward to getting a chance to play, until he met owner Leonard Tose and thought something was very wrong with the organization. So he decided to take more money to play for the Toronto Argonauts instead.
