NFL 2021 season - Belichick Strikes Back

Per Rapoport: “
The #Texans are not expected to trade QB Deshaun Watson before today’s 4 pm cut down day deadline, sources tell me and
@TomPelissero
. Barring a dramatic turn, Houston is now positioned to keep him into the regular season — at least.”

Shocker.

You realize the trade deadline is in November, right? When someone like Jackson from the Miami Herald is saying that there's a strong push on the Dolphins' part to get Watson, you basically have to have your head in the sand to not realize that a whole bunch of smoke is probably suggestive of at least a brush fire.

You’re still not understanding that I’m not saying there’s no trade discussion at all - I’m only saying that I don’t think it’ll end up happening. I’m not clear on why you’re so insistent that I believe this.

If you also look at Mac Jones performance in the preseason. A 22 year old who might stick around for a while and could improve every year versus a guy who best case scenario would have one good year and take off. The 22 year old only really needs to prove he already meets minimum standards for a starting quarterback, no?

Only 9 days until the beginning of the season. It's felt like a longer summer than most. Cowboys @ Buccaneers could be a terrific opener - of course, it depends on how Dak looks post-injury.

The Cam cut also sets up Mac vs Tua in Week One - an Alabama reunion.

Not really. It is a big step from preseason to regular season, and cutting Newton means Mac Jones is out there without a net.

Stephen Ross will go apeshit if the Dolphins lose. If he is the one pushing for Watson, it will be after a loss here that will push things to a boil.

Remember when David Carr got sacked like 75 times as a rookie in 2002? Dude was never the same, he lost all confidence and got to the point of just dropping to the ground behind the pocket because he was terrified of getting hit. And he washed out soon thereafter.

This is why I don't understand, in any way, the bloodthirsty way some people are screaming for the Bears to start Justin Fields in week 1. Not only does he have huge holes in his game (holds onto the ball way too long, can't read defenses at the line), the Bears' offensive line is just beyond abysmal. He'll get decapitated behind them.

That is why certain teams are playing 'Wheel of Quarterback' every three to four seasons at the top of the draft. They try to rush these guys out there and they simply aren't ready and the setbacks seem huge to a young man and they don't recover.

Miami has been playing the Wheel for about a decade-and-a-half now. Burning a bunch of second round picks either via the draft or trades (John Beck, Pat White, Chad Henne, A.J. Feeley) then spent a first rounder on Tannehill, gave him little to no support then dumped him for a fourth round pick. Now we're on to Tua Tagovailoa, who we're already trying to rush out the door for an accused sexual offender. We'll give up the farm for the accused sex offender, get him beat up and then be spinning the Wheel again in three or four years.

I think the only team with the tools for a rookie to start week one is the 49ers, and I think they would be insane to trot Trey Lance out there.

Do we have any reason to think Cam Newton would have been more successful than last year?

It’s a short term quarterback whose ceiling is “Average” versus taking a risk with a younger, longer term team player with a high ceiling and low floor. And given Newton wouldn’t have stuck around long anyway it’s a “Win I win, lose I break even” gamble.

Let’s put it this way. Will New England fans really feel good about going 7-9 and missing the playoffs again, unless they do it in a way that gives them home for the future?

Sorry for triple post - breaking news - Patriots cut Cam Newton - Mac Jones will be starter.

Like many franchises in many sports, Pats appear to be looking for “another” Tom Brady. This will likely continue for at least as long as Bellichik and the current GM in place.

As for Cam, his career can continue in the league, but it will.need to be in a different form. He’ll have to not only accept a back up role, but embrace it, covet it. Cam has to get it in his spirit that he is no longer this stud hoss QB, who only needs the right situation in order to return to “glory,”

He can get another NFL job, but he’ll have to convince a team that he WANTS that back up role and that is all he wants. If I could advise him, I’d tell him to go to Dwight Howard’s IG page and wach his vids for the last 2 years. After multiple DPOY awards, All-Star selections, he is gone experienceing this most enjoyable time in the NBA.

I would say the Mac Jones doesn't have to be the starter in week one to be the hope for the future. There are lots of different ways to bring a QB along, this is the route that New England has chosen. Jones will face very good defenses in week one and four with the Dolphins and Buccaneers.

Right now, Jones is the only actual QB on the active roster, with the Patriots releasing Brian Hoyer yesterday.

There’s no reason whatsoever for Miami to give up on Tua so quickly. Chicago saw four seasons of Trubisky; Tua has played half of one.

That has never stopped an NFL team from making poor decisions before. Arizona traded up for Josh Rosen, then turned around and took Kyler Murray in the very next draft.

Well, yeah.

Rosen will go down as a Leaf-esque failure.

I think there were personality issues there, but I’m not sure cutting bait was the right move. If I was a QB staring at the sky from my back for most of the time every game, I might’ve been peeved as well.

I think there are personality issues too.

The guy has been cut from 4 teams.

Watson is not being traded, no one will give up picks for someone who may ultimately never play again in the NFL. Besides, it's quite probable with all that's going on any trade with Watson might get nixed by the NFL anyway.

In any case, the Texans without Watson playing will be the worst team in the NFL this season. We were practically the worst WITH him playing last year. LOL
