The mole on John Boy's cheek could never happen naturally. It has to have been time travelers genetically manipulating his parents.

I mean, you are an Admiral whereas Swedish is but a lowly Commodore.

By the laws of Trek, you must be the evil/antagonistic one whereas Swedish should merely be but a minor thorn in the captain's side ;p

As soon as they type "STD". An instant identifier with 99% accuracy.

Yeah, one can criticize DSC all they want but if they use the acronym STD you know they're not going to have a fair and considerate overview. They're coming at it with the opinion that the show in and of itself is the Trek equivalent of a disease.

Only because some fans of the show have made a ridiculous fuss about the acronym, which is a perfectly fine one. It's never a sensible idea to display oversensitivity about a thing.

I would believe there's nothing to calling the show "STD" if these same people also referred to Voyager as "STV" and Enterprise as "STE". You're disingenuous and you know it. You yourself never referred to the show as "STD" until around October of 2017 when you realized you hated the show.

Four years in, and the vast majority of people who use "STD" are people who don't like the series. Usually, fans of the show don't refer to it as such. People like Noname Given are the lone holdouts (which is the reason I said 99% accuracy instead of 100% in the earlier post). Even people who are critical of the show but don't hate it simply refer to it as "Discovery" or DIS or DSC.

I actually prefer that the bashers of the show refer to Discovery as "STD". It's a means of instantly identifying where they stand. It's a short-hand and a useful one.

It's also good for platforms that let you mute posts by keyword.

Yep. Easy enough to mute people on a relatively low-member place like here - particularly as it tends to be the same few flooding their negative view - but on a broader platform it's a great way to filter them out.

Interesting what catches on in different places and what doesn't. 22 years here, and I've never seen Fandom Menace types say "Drekkies". The Fandom Menace is why I try to avoid a lot of social media platforms when it comes to Star Trek.

I know a couple of good social media Trek groups, but I won't say what they are here. I'm not going to be the reason they potentially become polluted.

That is a term which tends to be used to suggest that those who like modern Trek are newcomers. Such a term wouldn't carry much weight here given that many of us have well-established accounts demonstrating our fandom long before the current series.

That's why other gaslighting techniques tend to be used, eg. suggesting that we only like it due to nostalgia, being desperate for new Trek, having low standards, etc.

An amount of the hate, maybe most of it, is just for the usual reasons; any time there's a new installment for the new generation, some of the older fans are buttmad.

But in regards to one certain ideological segment of the hatedom (hatedumb), though? Sorry, I know this will step on some toes, but I blame "Enterprise." If ever a "Star Trek" spinoff went backwards on the progressive tones that the Original Series set off, it was that one. "Enterprise"--at least the first two seasons of it--was like a "Star Trek" specially tailored for American incels: female characters constantly overly sexualized; cast disproportionately white and 'Murican for a crew supposedly representing Earth; lead character acting like an entitled tantruming manchild, and being treated like the "hero" for it; Captain Dubya; Chief Engineer Nascar; First Officer Catsuit; sexy decontamination, porny UPN previews, sexy ailen babes in catsuits or chain-bikinis tossing themselves at Captain Dubya and Lt. Nascar; country music for a theme song......etc.

And of course, if you entered the "Star Trek" fandom when Enterprise was airing, you probably missed the significance of each previous series' diversity for its time. So maybe it was easier to think (or pretend) that "Star Trek" was "always" mild in its "politics."

I'm not saying that only incels like "Enterprise," there were even parts of the later seasons that I myself liked. But I really do think "Enterprise" opened the floodgates for people that would never have come near "Star Trek" otherwise.

Eh, this thread was dead and buried, and no need to revive it going into the premiere with an overly political post that has nothing to do with Disco and is guaranteed to start an argument. Closed.
