What's it set out to do, apart from having characters be tactless in how replicated matter is made out of shit? There's nothing to censor since that's actual verbatim dialogue from an episode. That's a way to win over children of all ages, woohoo! Even South Park would recoil in cringe. :guffaw: Okay, I know and have seen where and how the tv show is a lot more than that, and better, but it's little stuff like those moments that become the proverbial low hanging fruit for any detractor anywhere on that side of the gamut regarding their hate or love for the show or anywhere in between.

Yes, previous incarnations swore as well. Despite being a lot less in frequency or in frivolity, with dramatic weight, refined context in which it was used, and there was still flak back in the day as well. That, or if there was when Picard made a dirty swear in French and nobody wrote in, the makers still seemed to realize it was crass and didn't keep the personality trait going? If so, it's not hard to imagine why. That's arguably a reason why the franchise has been fractured, general frivolity in a show that also has "DISCO" written on peoples' shirts - it's hard to take the show seriously when the show doesn't. It's almost camp except the show doesn't seem to know if it wants to be camp or serious. At least it knows how to be edgy for edgy sake.

Not for the squeamish or anyone who hasn't seen 'Red Dwarf" where they talk about "urine recyc" ever sixth or so episode, but as even ENT allowed more creative inference from the audience (they hint at it but weren't going to be so overt) as opposed to the tactless South Park-esque approach, which still doesn't work, this Trek devolution speaks for itself. Good acting by the guy, I'll admit, but Trek's capable of being a little less jocular.

The peach-floating-on-meatlocker-freezer palette was passe by 2007 too...

Reason(s) others have for not the show is/are their own.

Indeed, I'd dislike it more if the comment at the end of the clip didn't mention the lack of diplomacy and now I'm far more interested in Osyraa's character as a result. So it may be cleverer than many, including myself, are giving it for. (There's an admission few were expecting to read...) Yet South Park and Red Dwarf still manage to do better with the same sort of crude humor. But they know they're comedies. It's not easy mixing together genres and all within a single episode of a show...

It's just an alternate word for excrement.

    I don't see what you're getting it.

It seems Discovery does things for shock value for the sake of shock value. There's just no realistic way that Federation outpost guy would have stayed at that outpost for 40 years. He would've just left a callback number.

To be fair, this shock value thing goes back to the days of TOS. We're told that Bele and Lokai have been fighting for 50,000 Earth years (they even go so far as to specify its Earth years). That's just absurd and unrealistic.

If that is the only hate thing is using a low hanging fruit then it's rather frivolous to begin with and barely worth commenting on. "Oh, my goodness, replicators recycle materials, including excrement." Please...

I've never been shocked by Discovery.
So if it was for shock value, they failed.

Yup. Discover is neither new nor offensive in this regard.

I mean I suppose it's technically possible all of these pictures were fabricated and this cat has been painstakingly photoshopped in countless photos and videos on her instagram account, https://www.instagram.com/gataquimera/ , and this account holder also has fooled People magazine https://people.com/pets/two-faced-cat-quimera-chimera/ , the New Republic journal https://newrepublic.com/article/118725/venus-chimera-cat-explained-geneticist , and the Department of Genetics at Columbia University (which commented on the cat's genetics in the articles)---but why would anyone do that?

That's the one. IIRC, that was their attempt to make Beverly relevant for the sixth season given the other episode they were developing for her (Face of the Enemy) ended up going to Deanna after everyone realized it made more sense to use her empathic abilities in that episode.

Meh, Star Trek's alien design work is strange on the best days or boring. Black on one side, white on the other isn't even in the top 10 of stupidest for Trek for me.

Well, if it's real then it's the result of genetic manipulation. There is absolutely no way that nature could cause a being like that to appear. I supposed with genetic manipulation it's even possible to create an animal half mammal half reptilian? If it's possible then you can be sure that it'll be done someday.

I mean, I don't know what your biology education background is and it could be very advanced, but genetics Professor Papaioannou of Columbia University gave an explanation of how this could happen in nature.

“It’s a fairly straightforward example of X-inactivation mosaicism, with the addition of a white spotting gene. All female mammals have two X-chromosomes,” explained the professor. “In a cat, one gene for fur color is located on the X chromosome. And in any female, expression of all the genes that are on the X chromosome will be ‘mosaic’ —that is, half of them will express one version of the gene (e.g., black fur) and half will express the other version of the gene (e.g., orange fur). The inactivation is random. Here we are talking about the orange/black mosaicism, which is highly visible, but the same pattern will hold true for other genes on the X that have two different versions — or alleles.”

Pfft. What does a genetics professor know?

Cats like this are real and exist today without generic manipulation.

Now it's not like Star Trek where an entire species is like that. The offspring of a cat like that are not guaranteed to also have the same look.

Yeah, and with thirty million species, and a quadrillion of specimens there should plenty of these around. I think that professor must be related to the one who originated the magic bullet theory.

It's just fur colour, it's not a hybrid of two different species.

Which interestingly ties into Bele and Lokai--we never got any indication they were a fusion of 2 different species, but just that their skin color looked that way. They were both of the same species.
