Spoilers "Superman & Lois" Season 1 spoiler discussion!

Loved, loved, loved the stuff in Metropolis, and Clark and Lois's early relationship. Nice mix of the traditional with the novel -- the latter being how Lois is dismissive of the Superman story because she has more important journalistic fish to fry, the way the two of them fall into an instant partnership and rapport, and the way she falls hard for Clark to the extent she doesn't care Superman is giving her the eye. As much as I'm enjoying the show we have, I wish we could also have a second, parallel show about their younger days in Metropolis.

Still kind of processing the last half. Part of me thinks Clark would never surrender or submit, but I also get how the show wants to emphasize the extent to which he'll do anything to protect his family.

Calling something drivel insults the people who enjoy it.
Be better than them, don't stoop to their level.
I think it’s drivel. I never said people who watch it are stupid. I’m sure there are things you find people like that you find so as well

Sure, but I won't insult them by insulting their show.

I'll just say I dislike it and maybe explain why.

But most of the time I don't express my displeasure. I just ignore what I don't like.

Drivel must be more insulting in the Colonies than here. :)
Speaking of Dig, I wonder if he’s a GL now? He and WW are the only heavy hitters not in the ArrowVerse yet.

Adam Rayner is better and more interesting as Tal-Rho than he ever was as Edge. I feel like they cast him with their endgame in mind.

Superman and Lois
Season 1 - Episode 11 - "A Brief Reminiscence In-Between Cataclysmic Events"

Clark/SM / Lois:
While a weak Superman takes the Eradicator device to the fortress, the flashbacks begin--first, with teenage Clark using the Kryptonian crystal to create the fortress. and activate holo-daddy, who gives Clark the info on his heritage. After being away for some unspecified tie, Clark returns to Smallville to open his heart to Lana, only to see her already romantically involved with Kyle (who notes there was an opening at the local fire station).

Eventually, Martha gives Clark a homemade costume, which he dons once he's in Metropolis responding to the car accident seen in the same flashback from earlier this season. Interviewing at the Daily Planet, Clark is informed by White that he needs more experience, but is given shit jobs (like picking up White's dry cleaning), but is placed under the wing of Lois Lane, who complains about the Planet's obsession with Superman, while the story of a Nazi wearing a metal mask (who has been terrorizing minority residents) has been "drowned out" by all of the Superman coverage.

One evening--while working on the Nazi story--Lois begins to thaw in her treatment of Clark, offering to help him get a city beat position. The next day, Clark overhears Lois threatened by the masked Nazi, who lets loose with a flamethower, but its blocked by Superman, who also stops the man from bombing the residents. Lois questions the mystery man, wondering what his name is, with said mystery man confident she will come up with something.

As he flies away, she gives him the name "Superman".

Months later, Lois conducts a TV interview with Superman, who gives few details about himself. He says he believes in "truth and justice" with Lois finishing the statement with "..the American way". Janet--Lois' producer--pokes at Lane with the idea of Superman liking Lois, but Lane does not see him in that way...and she points out that she's been dating Clark for a couple of months, and loves him--though she has not shared that with him yet.

Clark takes Lois to Smallville to meet his mother,..and to tell Lois he's Superman. When he demonstrates his powers to Lane, this leads off scenes of their romance, marriage and early life together.

At the fortress, Clark tells holo-daddy about his marriage, when suddenly, holo-daddy screams at Clark to get out....

As Clark wonders why his father reacted in that way, Lois announces she's pregnant. Jumping ahead, the couple learn they're having twins. While discussing this, Clark is confronted by Edge, who threatens Clark's "teenage sons"--clearly an event that did not occur in Clark's real history. It turns out that Superman is still at the fortress in the present day, in a dream state thanks to a device placed on his head by Edge. Removing the device, the still-weak Superman spits his anger at Edge's threats against his children. Edge argues that Superman sacrificed his heritage to pretend to be "less" as a bumbler among humans. He continues threatening Superman, promising to expose his family's super-connection to the world, and charges that Jor-El " corrupted" Kal-El...and Lara.

Superman's resistance leads Edge to destroy the crystal that held Jor-El's hologram; Superman attempts to fight, but is too weak to even last a minute. Edge leaves the unconscious Superman in the fortress while he heads for Smallville...

Back at Smallville, Lois discusses recent events with Lana and Kyle, while the twins listen to Sarah admitting she misjudged her father. Alone with Jordan, Sarah finally kisses him, saying she does not want to be "just friends" anymore, and of course, Jordan agrees.

Kyle apologizes to Lois for mistreating her since her arrival, referring to her as "good people"

Back at the Kent farm, while Lois and the twins head to the house, Edge lands in front of them, his hatred for humans spilling out. Jordan tries to stand up to Edge, but he's blasted to the ground by Edge's heat vision. Superman arrives, and feeling he's cannot put up a fight, he pledges to serve Edge if he leaves his family alone (SEE NOTES). Feeling he has no options, Superman bids farewell to his family, as he flies to Edge's own fortress in the desert, where Edge's unsympathetic holo-daddy instructs Edge to use the Eradicator on Superman, which bathes him in what appeared to be the energy of a red sun (or he's under the control of one or more of the Kryptonian souls stored in the Eradicator). At the same time, Lois calls Irons, telling him that his prediction has come true.

NOTES:
The best part of the episode centered on the present day "aftermath" conversations between the Kents and Lana, Kyle and Sarah. How a major and/or near-disastrous event impacts regular people is something this (and most Arrowverse series) needs, but it often glossed over.

The flashback scenes--the fortress and Metropolis in particular--were underwhelming, as it was fan-servicing far too much with in referencing the Donner film beats, only in a very watered-down way. It did not need to walk down that avenue. At least this series flipped Lois' reactions by having her fall for Clark instead of the starry-eyed crush that Donner-Lois had for Superman while treating Clark like a nerdy brother.

Another issue is that yeah, the episode was not going to be a full-on origin story in flashback, but there's no sense of struggle with this Kent/SM. It all just happens for him with the ease of a cartoon, whereas showing any of his difficulties as an alien among humans, yet still deciding to live among them would have been an important counter to Edge's anti-human ranting. Not that it would be designed to change Edge, but it would have provided Edge with more reasons why Superman felt he's earned his place among mankind--despite opposition or fear--which for life experience, is a strengthening course, and would have posed a greater, believable threat to Edge.

Yes, the "pledge" scene was a nod to the fortress scene between Superman and Zod from Superman II.

The Fleischer-inspired costume just looks odd on Hoechlin's form, and that shoulder pad business did not help matters.

The FX on this series--specifically all of the fortress scenes and many of Clark's/Superman's use of power is just sub-par.

Up to this point, the series had been hard-leaning on the sons following in predictable footsteps: Jonathan--despite his head-butting with Sam about the "how and why" of the anti-Kryptonian weapons--has argued across two episodes why a powerless human should have such weapons, while Jordan is more--or less--sort of groomed to follow his father's path. I suspect the showrunners will (or perhaps should) subvert this expectation--at least with Jordan (if he feels he will never be "super" enough to use his powers like his father) seeing the necessity of the DOD's work, and placing the use of his powers on the back-burner of his life, reverting back to his earlier position of not wanting yet another thing to make him an outsider.

That would be far more refreshing than seeing a "Superboy" moment somewhere down the line.

The series returns July 13th.

GRADE: C.

Supergirl must be gone at this time. Hence why she’s not being mentioned here.

Good catch. From the way Edge speaks of Kryptonians on earth, coupled with Clark never mentioning a cousin, it appears she's not in that world, despite the fact this is an Arrowverse series....unless--as I've long predicted--that SG left the 21st century long before the point where the twins were born, so for Clark, she's been out of sight, out of mind for some time.
