I think the JJ film allowing Kirk to leap frog across many more experienced crewmen to take command of the Enterprise was ludicrous!!! I mean where was his time on the Republic or the Farragut? What happens when he meets the Vampire Cloud? He hasn't met the thing there or Ben Finney? :wtf:
Writers and producers today just think they'll never notice or remember any of that so just put it in!

Since Ben Finney was already born, perhaps the Kelvin event changed his career path so that Finney and Kirk didn't meet up to become best friends at Starfleet Academy. Kirk changed from a wholesome, grim student to a lech, so, I doubt Ben and his wife would want to befriend this changed Kirk. Besides, in the Kelvin timeline, Kirk entered Starfleet Academy several years later than in the prime timeline, so, they just missed each other. I do feel a little sad for the dead crew of the Republic that blew up... :weep:

So in the alternate universe she could be called "Whatshernamie".

Finney was probably put on report by who ever took Kirk's slot (who was happy to throw the book at him) and drummed out of the service. His wife left and they never had children.

You know, I'm pretty sure JJ and writers understood perfectly well that being in a different timeline meant they wouldn't just be repeating all of the same experiences that had been referenced or alluded to in the original series, etc. This wasn't meant to be exactly the same James T. Kirk & Co., or exactly the same progression of events. You might even suppose that that was the point of doing it that way.

Which is not to say that there weren't a whole lot of people insisting, back in 2007-2008, that we absolutely must see characters A, B, C, and planets K, L, M, and situations X, Y, Z. There absolutely were. And then some.

Star Trek shouldn't ever be just about ticking continuity boxes. No doubt the 2009 movie was a far more exciting origin story than one faithfully adhering to TOS references would have been.

Continuity really is best used when abused. By all means make use of Gary Mitchell in a parallel reality story, but with totally different motivations and life choices and an optional goatee! Or then pick a point of uncontested canon, such as the Klingons having an Empire, and use it to establish that they have no Emperor. The fans will get the references, the what-ifs, the alternate takes. Or then they will simply enjoy the introduced feature for its perceived novelty.

However, a big part of the 2009 movie and its sequels was that reality will always conspire to make a Jim Kirk who is captain of the Enterprise and has Spock and McCoy to his side. It's a premise fairly well executed and nicely concluded in ST:B where Kirk ruminates on life choices and differing paths, seemingly speaking of himself vs. his dad, but really sledgehammering the fourth wall with comparisons to "that other Jim". Not all parallel stories work like that, many being mere retellings of It's a Wonderful Life or then going full throttle for a truly divergent history; the Abramsverse is entitled to exploring the concept of the universe needing and making a Jim Kirk. Despite differences, that is, rather than through faithfully smoothing out every single one of them and dragging in Gary Mitchell and glueing him to the helm pulpit. It suffices to recast Carol Marcus to play a different role in Kirk's life, and then have her namedrop Chris Chapel...

Jame was born before the big falling out between Kirk and Finney, So in the alternate universe she was probably born but probably had a different name.

Yes the mere fact that Pine looks nothing like Shatner (except to a very old and feeble Spock) proves that he isn't the same man living in another reality but surely they could have come up with a better reason to give command of a Starship to a rookie, and not just any Starship!!!

By that logic, Star Trek III isn't a sequel to II because Saavik looks and acts entirely differently.

It's certainly possibly that those were actually TWO different people in-universe:
    1) Lt JG Saavik who is a recent Academy graduate, half Romulan and Spock's protégé. The emotional turmoil got to her and she went on shore leave after ST2
    2) Lt Sa'vique is a more experienced officer and full Vulcan, who was posted to the Reliant and got rescued by Enterprise from Ceti Alpha 5 following the events of ST2. Kirk got to know her a bit before she and David Marcus were reassigned to the Grissom.

I dunno man, Shatner and Pine look pretty close sometimes. Depends on the Kirk makeup. The first season had some instances where they were close enough for Pine to pass.

I mean, there's no way Saavik is the same character!
