DC's "Naomi" coming to CW from Ava Duvernay

OK, that would explain it.
Well, Black Lightning was originally separate from the Arrowverse, and so was Stargirl, which we know is going to cross over. It's no surprise that the show would start out separate and making its own name, but that doesn't preclude crossovers later. Like I said, the premise of Crisis made it possible to cross over with anything DC. Or anything else, for that matter.
Good point.

Where/when was it definitively confirmed that a crossover between Stargirl and the Arrowverse is happening?

I can't find anything that indicates this beyond one article from a notoriously unreliable site that I won't name.

Today when it was announced John Wesley Shipp will guest star as Jay Garrick in Season 2.

What's happening with JWS on Stargirl isn't a crossover; it's the equivalent of Amanda Pays and others showing up on The Flash to play different versions of characters they'd previously played.

Kaci Walfall cast as Naomi

Three further roles also cast.

I expect that she has talent as well as being age appropriate--DuVernay's attachment to this series has raised my expectations for a quality product. I am also thinking that this could be a great series to crossover with Stargirl.

It doesn't sound like the TV version of Naomi"s origin story is going to include Superman because they're describing the catalyst for the story as a "supernatural event" and I wouldn't classify the appearance of a character like that as being "supernatural".

More casting news:

Barry Watson - Greg, Naomi's adoptive father
Mouzam Makkar - Jennifer, Naomi's adoptive mother
Mary-Charles Jones - Annabelle, Naomi's best friend
Aidan Gemme - Jacob, Annabelle's boyfriend
Daniel Puig - Nathan, Naomi's ex-boyfriend

Also, Amanda Marsalis will direct the pilot episode. She's previously directed episodes of "Ozark", "Westworld", and "The Umbrella Academy". She directed several episodes of the upcoming TV show "Invasion".

This has to be the most random DC Comic project ever. I used to read a lot of DC Comics and I have never heard of her

She's a really new DC character, introduced in a series by Bendis and with appearances in Action Comics, Young Justice, and more recently Justice League.

So all those established characters they have that haven’t been used yet and they chose her? Weird.

I've never understood why prior familiarity should be a requirement. Nobody'd ever heard of Luke Skywalker before 1977 or Marty McFly before 1985. Iron Man and Thor were C-list characters when their movies were made, and the Guardians of the Galaxy were pretty obscure before their movie became a huge hit. The Men in Black comic book was so obscure that most fans of the movies probably have no idea they're even based on a comic.

Besides, your typical Marvel or DC comic has a readership in the thousands or tens of thousands, while the audience for a TV series is in the millions and for a tentpole feature is in the hundreds of millions. So it doesn't matter how well-known the character was before, because the whole point of bringing a comic book character to the screen is to introduce that character to a far larger audience than they had already. It's not about coasting on familiarity, it's about creating it.

I'm more excited for her next volume of stories than any other established character. Established doesn't mean better, not by a long shot, and her show may reflect that as well, hopefully.

It's not weird at all.

TV is the perfect medium to expand interest in a character like Naomi and expose her to a much wider audience (if the series gets picked up).
