DC's "Naomi" coming to CW from Ava Duvernay

So all those established characters they have that haven’t been used yet and they chose her? Weird.
The comic seems to have gotten a pretty good reception, so that probably inspired to do the show as a way to raise the character's profile.
Naomi has at least appeared in some comics, WB was already working on the Yara Flor Wonder Girl show before her first comic even came out.

Just read the latest issues of Justice League which focus heavily on Naomi. Bendis drops several lines about how powerful she is, which is odd in that we've really not had a chance to see her in action all that much.

That sounds like Bendis.

Well, Andreyko has been friends with Brian Bendis since the 1990s. He's worked with him on Torso for Image, and when Bendis took over the Superman titles, Andreyko was given Supergirl. Before the pandemic, Andreyko was set to write a spin-off title for Bendis' Event Leviathan. So, that's the Bendis connection.

Andreyko also has a history of writing comics with strong female leads for DC. The aforementioned Supergirl is one example, others are Manhunter and Wonder Woman '77. He has experience in this field, so he would certainly fit in with Naomi.

And then, the same week that it's announced The CW has given Naomi a series order, Marc Andreyko resigns as a competitor from the Movie Trivia Schmoedown. He was co-champion in the Teams division, with a match in which he'd have to defend the title coming up soon. He's been a competitor for five years, a fan favorite, outspoken about how much he loved the Schmoedown, and he had to pretty much abandon his team mate Jeff Sneider before one of the most important matches. And the reason he gave was a job opportunity.

So, yeah, my guess is that job opportunity is with Naomi. It wouldn't be writing a comic book series, he's written comic books the whole time he was competing in the Schmoedown. So it has to be something bigger.

So, yeah, the timing of the Naomi announcement and Andreyko's Schmoedown resignation, Andreyko's history of writing female superheroes, and him being a guy Bendis calls on as a writer he trusts, that all seems to point to him being part of the show.

How involved is Bendis in the show? Articles I've seen have DuVernay and Jill Blankenship from Arrow writing.

Bendis is not officially involved with the show. However, he is one of the biggest names in comics, and when he created the character for DC, you can bet he made sure he had some say with what would be done with the character in other media. Now, he might not want to be personally involved with the day-to-day business of producing a TV show, especially considering his past experiences with the MTV Spider-Man cartoon and things like that, but that would have putting a writer he trusts on the production make even more sense.

Creating a character does not automatically give you any degree of creative control if/when said character shows up outside of the media for which they were created.

Again, this is Brian Michael Bendis, one of the biggest names in the industry, who has created several big characters and stories over at Marvel which were adapted into TV and movies, creating a new character for the other of the Big Two, so while the contents of his contract are not public record we have access to, you can still be sure he that he made certain that his rights were protected and he'd have a say. Even if it wasn't in the contract, DC/Warner certainly want to keep Bendis working for them and therefore are incentivised to keep him happy.

I also noted at the beginning that this was a feeling based on the factors I laid out above, I do not claim certainty. Far from it. It is an educated guess at best. You are absolutely free to disagree with it, and if you have anything that would disprove my guess, I welcome you to share it.

As the least, he'll get a check.

Doubtful.

The only way that Bendis could have any control over - or receive any compensation as a result of - the way the character of Naomi is handled on TV would be to be involved with the TV series, which he's not.

It doesn't matter that he created the character and is a massive name in the comics world and at DC Comics right now. He's not involved with the Naomi TV series, so he has zero say with regards to it.

I'm sorry, are you from the 1970s? Because, of course comics creators get compensation for their work being adapted into other media. And when a big name writer signs a contract with the biggest competitor to the publisher he worked at for close to two decades, you can be sure that contract had all kinds of benefits.

I was under the impression comics folks get paid when their creations are used in other media.

Creator equity only applies to characters that aren't deemed to be 'derivative', so some comic creators get compensation and some don't.

And since DC Comics itself determines whether or not a character is derivative, I remain doubtful that Bendis will get equity payments until or unless he confirms that he will.

I see you changed your post.
I'm willing to bet Naomi falls in the non derivative side.

Yeah, DC doesn't get to decide whether the character is derivative or not. Let's say they tried that, they'd have to argue that, and I'd love to hear that argument.
Even if, DC creators get royalties even for story elements being used. Neal Adams got a check for The Dark Knight based on Batman #251. No way Bendis doesn't even get paid for the Naomi TV show.
