The men of Rohan will answer!Cannot believe men still using hoary old ‘Blow the Horn of Gondor’ pickup line. Remember when original plans to have Xylophone of Gondor scrapped by Steward in favor of silly-looking horn. Now know why.

Because he's James T. Kirk. That's how.
That would actually mean that he made Captain slightly younger, since we know that Kirk is 34 years old at the time of "The Deadly Years." So if that's Year 3 of the 5YM, that would mean that Kirk made Captain at age 31 at minimum. In my headcanon, Where No Man is the end of the first year, and seasons 1-3 are actually year 2-4. Don't know if that helps though. Heh.

Riker's offered captaincy at like 32. Is that also highly exceptional? Dialing back to pre-TOS, Burnham is... what, 31 or so at the beginning of DIS? I always got the vibe that unless you're below-par, the Command Training Program can make you captain by around that time.
I get the feeling I'm thinking too deeply on this and the answer is "captains are on the older side except when they're not, and when they're not, they're probably central to the story."
He's supposed to be the greatest starship captain of all time, of course he would get promoted fast.
Riker is also an exceptional officer in universe and was FO on the flagship. I would imagine that's a pretty rare thing in Starfleet but obviously the TV shows are going to be about the cream of the crop.

How did Pike become Captain so fast?
Hunter was 37. It seems like Gene wanted a younger man leading the crew.
I think Grant was referring to Pike/Hunter being young not Shatner being younger than Hunter.AFAIK, it was Hunter's idea to not continue playing Pike. Gene wanted to keep him.
Since we have no idea how old Pike is, I'm not sure that question can be answered.
Which makes him one very young Captain.According to Mendez, about Kirk's age.
