It is because Karen and Ed haven't really worked through their problems. From the outside, all looks okay - put on a brave face. But to the family - no. And when the "truth" of Kelly's adoption was revealsed, it kind of brought these issues to the forefront.
Looks like trigger happy Marines are starting a war on the Moon. You shouldn't start shooting until you actually see a weapon. Especially if you out number them 2:1 and you have the drop on them.
Gordo and Tracy on the Moon together, and Karen & Gordo's son can't stay away from each other.
Will Ed find out?
When will Molly need a white cane?
Will Kelly go back to Arlington for more Vietnamese Food?
Time to change the name of the show to: As The Earth & Moon Rotate.

I was thinking about something that struck me as odd. For all its impact on the audience, the Karen/Danny storyline is a very small chunk of the show, only a few minutes out of each episode. But it also gave us the titles of the last two episodes, despite only having a couple of scenes within the episodes (and much more momentous things happening in the other plot lines). This strikes me as a signal from the writers towards what K/D is capital-A About.
The main storyline for the season is the build-up towards war on the moon. It’s a terrible idea, a rat-king of entangled disasters, but no one can seem to think of a better way for solving the problem of respecting others’ property on the moon than “a man with a rifle.” This all started last season, with the Cosmonauts sneaking around the Jamestown mine and putting up listening devices. That seemed to be resolved when Ed decided to accept his captured Cosmonaut’s help with rescuing Ellen so she could rescue Ed in turn, and both sides reached an understanding. Except in the beginning of this season, we found out nothing had been resolved, and the Cosmonaut immediately planted another listening device. The problem was ignored and festering for ten years, and then when it finally gets attention again, it’s grown into an incipient catastrophe.
Karen, likewise, has issues that she assumed were resolved, about the dangers of Ed’s job, about her own role in Shane’s misbehavior and unexpected death, and whether she was really happy with being the peppiest Astro-wife. She seemed to work them out, through her friendship with Wayne, and getting a job outside of the home, but then Kelly decided to join the military, and Karen and Ed both exploded with all the tension they’d turned away from, mistaking avoiding it for resolving it. She pushed Ed back into space, falling directly back into the Astro-wife habit at the first sign that he’d even had the thought that he couldn’t “have it all” as a father and a professional and would have to choose, even though she’d already learned it would destroy her, and then immediately learns that despite her brave face and lies to herself, that’s still the case, when Ed crashes his plane after hot-dogging around. The problem was ignored and festering for ten years, and then when it finally gets attention again, it’s grown into an incipient catastrophe.
I’m still noodling on this, but I’m certain that Karen’s storyline is a parallel and metaphor for the moon-war storyline, showing how the exact same human flaws cause disasters and suffering on the international and intimate scale. I’m not quite sure how far to take this (Danny, the navel cadet, is the military setting up shop in the astronaut’s civilian domain, and messing things up by ignoring the established and well-functioning order of things? Or maybe Danny and/or Karen are the Soviets overstepping the bounds of decorum and good taste and expecting things to work out fine?), but I feel a lot better now that I understand the framework this is happening in on a literary level within the larger story, and it’s not just a weird random thing that’s happening between a kid and his dead friend’s hot mom.

My heart broke for Molly when she pushed her jet to its upper altitude limits and she desperately reached out for outer space. She knows now that she's already showing symptoms to her radiation exposure from the solar storm that there's no way she'll ever make it up to space. First glaucoma, what's next? At least she finally told Wayne the truth, if only because he had to browbeat her to do it.
Speaking of confessions, Gordo finally arrived at Jamestown and before he knows, it has already discovered Tracy's secret smoke pit (which really raises the question of how no one else has noticed...) and tells her the truth about his last mission. Hell of a time to tell her that but Gordo was even more ballsy by telling her that he told Sam that he was going to win her back. That whole conversation, complete with Gordo owning up for all of his past mistakes and being the reason their marriage collapses and the way she responded to him, does suggest he actually has a chance to win her back.
Bill was being an arrogant asshole towards Aleida and, while I initially had no problem with throwing "Peanut" in his face after his insult to her, I'm glad she swallowed her own pride and went to apologize to him. Of course, it was halfheartedly at first but after he hearing his side of the story, she (and I) suddenly understood his pain and she in return told him about her own shameful past, being shot just for being hungry and then fleeing help because she was undocumented. That entire scene was incredibly cathartic for both characters but I do wish we had seen the following moments as they continued to mend bridges and find common ground. I would've much preferred that over the shit was going on with Karen and Danny.
Speaking of family drama I would like to see more of instead of the aforementioned garbage, I loved Kelly's visit to the Vietnam restaurant in search of her birth father and then accidentally meeting her sister. I cannot fathom the pain she experienced talking to her, watch her lovingly interact with their father, and not being able to feel the same connections. I hope she has the courage to go back after seeing the same photo of her parents on the billboard.
Unsurprisingly, Pathfinder is getting armed up and Sally Ride is not happy about it. I think Ed isn't happy about either but Ed being Ed (and a military man) he's much more reserved about displeasure about the situation. Ultimately, he probably realizes there's nothing he can do about it without jeopardizing his position for the launch. Question is will he be able to look past his desire to return to space in order to do the right thing?
Not that it's going to be any easier now that the Jamestown Marines seriously fucked up and shot unarmed Soviets who were trying to reach translation cards and killing one of them in the most horrible way possible.

I have say that you put much more thought into that whole storyline than I did. I do think you're onto something there with the parallels with the brewing conflict on the Moon and ,while I mostly like that parallel, I think there must've been a better way of dealing it than Karen fucking the son of husband's best friend, a young man she literally watched grow up. It's just an extra layer of gross that I don't think was necessary to demonstrate that story parallel.

I couldn't really see the plans of the Buran that Margo was looking at, but the Zenit boosters on the Energia that put the real unmanned Buran into orbit in 1988 were RP-1/LOX liquid fuelled not solids. Couldn't make a dramatic point though if they weren't a ripoff of the US SRBs in this timeline.

Gordo owning up to his past and being frank and straight with Tracy about it and that he's up there to get her back, if she lets him, was good character development.
I was extremely worried something would happen to Gordo and the Shuttle at launch though, specially after him being all smiles. Ed helping Gordo suit up was a nice moment.

I don't think they're going to have a war in this show (unless it's deescalated quickly) since there really wouldn't be a space program anymore, and I doubt they'd end the show on a war.

Yes a 3rd season has already been greenlit and confirmed, as has it's time period.
At the very least, someone at mission control should be able to speak and understand Russian and pass messages. There would be a delay of a few seconds because of the speed of light, but it could prevent a conflict.
I'm not sure if it's a qualification issue because they need to find a Marine who would qualify to go into outer space ( so can't be a run of the mill jarhead), who's experienced AND speaks russian? I'm sure that NASA and the US government could have found someone in their armed forces who would be space worthy and speak the language of the enemy but then again it would probably defuse a dramatic situation before it became dramatic and you can't have that in a TV show
Good episode - the infidelity storyline still bothers be and i think it's unnecessarily close to soap territory, i just can't see that end up any other way than in clichés.
Aleida opening up to Peanut and learning out the true background was the best part of the episode, just shows that often enough there is much more to a story and it somewhat lessened or even completely removed the abrasiveness and arrogance of Strausser because actually he may be a badass. Them opening up to each other could make them real friends and i'm happy it happened.
Molly's (supposedly) last flight - that storyline is quickly boiling up and it was heartbreaking to see her try to recreate her space experience. Since joining NASA it was all she ever wanted to do and be but it will come to an end soon. I wonder if her going blind will mean she'll be written out or if she will continue as a blind person, which could open up a completely new storyline for disabled people at the workplace and the struggles they go through. After all as head of the astronaut candidate program sight may not be a prerequiste, it's intelligence and experience that's needed.
Dead Kosmonauts, well that had to happen and i'm wondering how the Soviets will respond to this. I just can't see any way how they or the US will back down over this so things should heat up even faster now.
Well, we don't know if the other guy is dead yet, I think they were trying to patch the hole? I'll have to watch the scene again.
As stupid as the Karen/Danny subplot is, whatever the writers were thinking, it would've helped had they given them more than one scene together per episode and if Danny had any depth or substance to his character.

I hope you're right about the direction Molly's story is heading for all of the reasons you stated. It would be a nice parallel to Geordi.
