For All Mankind Trailer - Apple TV- SPOILER

They showed footage of an F-4 Phantom on a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier. KAL 007 was brought down in 1983. I was on a US Navy Aircraft Carrier from 1978-1982. We did not have any Phantoms on the Carrier I was on. I never saw any on any other carrier we sailed with. We used the F-14 Tomcat as the air superiority fighter. We used the EA6B Prowler for any electronic counter measures. I know that some of the F-4's were the Wild Weasel electronic counter measure aircraft, but I never saw them based on carriers from the late 70's through the 80's. Their universe is different in that regard also.

Indeed. Perhaps Grumman had moved most of their engineering base over to the space programme instead leaving it with Aircraft post Apollo in this universe?

Looking through Wiki, the Phantoms were still in in service aboard carriers until 1984 when they were replaced with F-18s and they didn't fully replace the Tomcats until 2006.

The last US carrier that had F-4 N's, that I am aware of, was the USS Coral Sea CV43. They were on an around the world cruise in 1983, going from Alameda, CA to Norfolk, VA, after they were reassigned to the Atlantic Fleet from the Pacific Fleet.

Although in a universe where Sam Nunn (D-Georgia) is replaced by Jimmy Carter (D-Georga) anything is possible. ;)

And just to be a party pooper - maybe the producers didn't think that hard about it and just used whatever footage they could get their hands on that fit and didn't do detailed checks, figuring the average viewers wouldn't even notice or care ;) :D

You have to blame the National News Channel, after looking at the stock footage, it was taken from the USS Forrestal CV59. The plane is in VF11 (victory fighter squadron 11) and they switched to F14's in early 1980. :D

Nerd!;)

At least it's a US fighter launching from a US carrier, i have seen shows and movies that even got that wrong ( using Soviet/Russian planes as US fighters and vice versa, Top Gun just being the most known example). Sometimes i wonder if the producers of these shows are that lazy or their interns that incompetent, most of these mistakes could be solved with a 2 minute Wikipedia or Google research to get it correct ( also applies to stock pictures for news channels).

I am 99% certain that was Sergei Korolev, legendary rocket engineer, and the point of divergence between our timeline and the one in the show. He was the USSR’s counterpart to Wernher von Braun, and they may have reached the moon had he not died in 1966.
You are absolutely correct. The giveaway was his talk about the gulag. Korolev did a stretch in a gulag after he was ratted on by a professional rival.

The second I saw that russian Jet I knew exactly what was going to happen

So Carter is the Senator from Georgia in this timeline. IRL he was never in the Senate.
I’m thinking that we’re being shown “Senator” Jimmy Carter now because he will win the 1984 presidential election, and serve two terms, setting the table for the third season time jump into the 90s. I may be wrong, of course..

For all the “butterfly effect” changes to our history that we have seen in the show, the details surrounding the shooting down of KAL 007 seem to be almost identical to those of the real incident. I wonder if the producers just wanted to use the extensive library of historical news footage with familiar network anchors instead of faux-Barbara Walters again to give it a little more realism.

It may also be a lot less expensive, especially if what they are using is in the public domain.

Well the cause of KAL 007 was because of the nav system, it was probably inevitable.

Also great coincidence of the Soviet launch site being there...

IRL, this event lead to Reagan to open the USA's GPS system to the rest of the world. I wonder if that will even still happen here.

If they really go down that path it'll be in the season finale at the worst possible moment but honestly a very cheap drama method. I wonder why it happened, there was not much lead up to it. Ed and Karen's marriage seemed solid despite their son's death which they seemed to have worked through ( as much as you can ever work through something like this).

This is veering dangerously close to soap territory and i don't like it.

I really don't like this Karen/Danny storyline either. There are much better topics to spend time on. They keep it up and I'll fast forward through those parts. If Ed gets pulled in, then that will be even worse for the series.

Danny is going back to school and Karen sold the bar. Maybe that story line has hopefully reached its conclusion. I just wonder how long they hold the lithium mine. They'll need more armed ground pounders in order to hold it around the clock.

I believe there are 6 soldiers? 2 per 8 hour shift should cover it, maybe even one with a rifle + a regular astronaut in a pinch, since for now the Soviets don't have weapons on the moon ( none that the show has revealed). I guess now that human waste has hit the fan NASA/the military will send up more military personell and more weapons, now that the cat is out of the bag.

I don't know how i feel if the show turns out to become a war show. I mean they are headed there at breakneck speed, each side escalating the issue and i suppose this is one way the departure from actual history could have gone but the Soviets should approach also their own economic and political collapse as has happened in the real world. However this could be the story for season 3.

It all depends on whether or not Mikhail Gorbachev rises to power and perestroika takes root, and if the US is still developing the SDI or something like it. The Soviets must also be burning a lot more cash on their space program (an active moon base, a fully funded Buran shuttle program) than they ever did in our timeline.

And those are Marines, so one with their rifle per shift ought to be more than enough.

That gets my goat as well. I wish there had been a mix of F-4s and F-14s.

I wonder if Kelly Baldwin's search for her natural parents finds her birth father in the United States, the report she got back in the snail mail said her mother died in child birth and it says he was an ARVN NCO translator. How will that possible news effect Karen and Ed?

The documents she received state that her birth father immigrated to the US and there was also a current address ( i believe somewhere in the DC area, could be mistaken though). So i guess we will see that storyline continue, possible with her traveling to this address to meet her genetic dad.

Texas, actually, but I forget where exactly.

The computer response. And she is in Texas also. It gave the home and work address as Arlington, Texas. That is in the Dallas, Fort Worth area. Not too far from Houston (250 miles), I'll bet she borrows the car. Maybe the busted rod in the Corvette has been fixed.

In our reality, the street for the home address is about three blocks short for that house number, and the work address shows the employer address is the back yards of houses on a different street.
