Fair enough. I like Neelix and was Ok with Wesley when he wasn't saving the ship twice a week. But to me, Threepio reminded me of a homophobic straight man trying to act gay.

EDIT: Neelix would also win that fight, I think. Anyone who can bang a Klingon and not only survive but actually enjoy the experience is no one to be messed with.

Never had an issue with Jake, just wasn't a main character in my opinion. I'm sure he probably appeared in more episodes than Garak, Nog, dukat, dumar...but all of those contributed to the story far more.

Neelix is lucky I wasn't in command of Voyager. After the first meal he cooked, I'd send him off in his ship and wish him luck. I'd even fill the tank for him.

You can't just send Wesley off on his own, because he's a kid. That's why he's more annoying.

    Michael Jonas approves your decision.

As for Wesley, all you need to do is enforce the very sensible rule about no children on the bridge. He goes the way of Harry, Katie, and Alexandra: a one-episode wonder.

Yeah, but he managed to be annoying even after he was a uniform-wearing acting ensign with a right to be there.

If he was never allowed onto the bridge, that would have been a non-issue.

Though honestly, the only issue I had with Wes was how often he seemed to wind up saving the day. It got silly after awhile.

I thought Neelix was a bar rodent.

He definitely called him a bar rodent. But that's Ok, because Neelix proceeded to verbally own him. ("The Q and the Gray")

I never got this. It feels like Kirks reputation for a maverick that got hugely exaggerated. Over his 85 episodes how many times did this happen? Naked Now, The Game, Datalore (though only by being marginally attentive, not due to his super-genius status)...maybe a little in When the Bough Breaks and Pen Pals, but not solo in either case. Menage a Troi somewhat. Final Mission on an away team. He solved the problem he himself created in Remember Me. In Evolution, Justice, First Duty and Naked Now he's also a source of a problem...

What'd he say? Please don't make me re-watch The Q and the Gray

Here's an excerpt. The first 10 minutes of the episode are probably better than you remember, though.

Q: "I just thought that the two of you might be able to give me some advice on how to break through Kathy's icy exterior. You know, man to man."
PARIS: "My advice would be to give up before you embarrass yourself anymore than you already have. Come on, Harry. We're not going to get a straight answer out of this guy."
Q (to Neelix): "You, bar rodent, another one of these fruity concoctions."
NEELIX: "Not unless you tell me why you're bothering Captain Janeway."
Q: "Captain Janeway? Now that's a subject I want to discuss. Tell me, what are some of her favourite things. Chocolate truffles? Stuffed animals? Erotic art?"
NEELIX: "You can't bribe Captain Janeway."
Q: "Oh, no? Isn't that what you do?"
NEELIX: "What are you talking about?"
Q: "I understand that you acquire things for her, create little interesting diversions, prepare little tasty treats. After all, why else would she be so fond of your fur-lined face?"
NEELIX: "Do you want to know what Captain Janeway likes about me? I'll tell you. I am respectful, loyal and most of all, sincere. And those are qualities which someone like you could never hope to possess."

I have a feeling people have spoken so much about Wesley Crusher being this impossibly annoying kid that the real deal doesn't seem so bad in comparison. I remember watching it the first time about ten years ago, and one of the main things I'd heard was 'Wesley is insufferable' and 'Wesley saves the day all the time'. Even though the character is annoying and never really works that well, he can't possibly live up to the negative buzz.

I'm sure at least some of it is more amused hyperbole than anything else. Much as we know Kirk didn't really bag a woman in every episode, we know Wesley didn't really save the ship all the time.

Yup, and it's bled into the public consciousness to the point where it became a major part of his character in the more 'general audiences' facing JJ movies. Same thing with Wesley. If you've watched Family Guy, Big Bang Theory, and I'm sure several other shows, you can go into TNG having never seen a single moment and still expect Wesley to be colossally annoying. He is annoying, but he isn't that annoying.

If you find Wesley annoying, you probably find Gene Roddenberry annoying, because Wesley IS Roddenberry, or at least his Gary Sue stand in.

I'd argue against your logic but there's no need...I didn't have to watch Roddenberry as a series regular on a TV show.

Never having met Roddenberry, I can't say how well I would or wouldn't have liked him...but if some of the stories I've heard are true, I think I'd have had some problems with the guy...

I think I would have liked Jake Sisko more. :p

He might have been sometimes nice to run into at parties, but some of the stories from 50 Year Mission about his workplace interactions while developing TNG (when he created Wesley) are cringey, to say the least.

More cringey than sexual assault of a TOS cast member? Do tell...

Maybe he can't live down to ALL the negative buzz in ALL the episodes... but he sure gives it his best shot. Not that I'm blaming Wheaton, it's the writers who got lazy.

Okay, the one where he was a stunt pilot on the academy stunt flying team was pretty good.
